Pres Kennedy nominated a Supreme Court Justice on Apr 3, 1962, he was confirmed EIGHT DAYS later

President Kennedy nominated Byron White on Apr 3, 1962, eight days later he was confirmed on Apr 11, 1962 - by a 'voice' vote.

WOW! That is amazing!

Something like that will never ever happen again in our lifetime.

some more time might have been useful. White was horrible on both women's and gay issues and Goldberg was forced to resign in 68.

Just the other day, there was a 97 to 0 vote, and that person could be fasttracked easily onto the court.
How could they filibuster someone who was unanimously named?
Makes no sense.(assuming there isn't some later controversy).

What is different from then til now?
Then, political season ended the day after election.
then, we didn't have the faux media(regular and alt) 24/7/365

compromise and working together is how the congress was run in all times prior to today, without the 24/7/365 spectacle.

and btw, neither man JFK nominated was out of the mainstream like Bork and Alito and Thomas and Scalia and Harriet Miers were.

Takes time nowadays.

First the president would make the appointment announcement.

The media would pick the appointment apart for the first week.

The nominee would have to have enough time to go to the Hill to visit (mostly individually) with all the U.S. Senators.

The Senate would not schedule the 'hearing' within the first few weeks.

And then my guess a week or so before a scheduled full senate vote.

As a side note: The Court of Appeals Judge (Sri Srinivasan) that got confirmed the other day 97-0 was originally appointed June 11, 2012 (almost a full year ago)
The GOP blocked his appointment in 2012 and Obama had to resend the nomination to the Senate in January 2013.
The GOPers really did not want to confirm him, I'm surprised that he ended up with as many votes as he did - I am still wondering how that happened

Regarding our two newest Supreme Court Justices...

Sonia Sotomayor: nominated June 1, 2009, confirmed August 6, 2009 (68–31)

Elena Kagan: nominated May 10, 2010, confirmed August 5, 2010 (63–37)

Something else I doubt we will ever see again in our lifetime.

Somethings change for the better. Some change for the worse. But things always are changing.

Frankly, I would be concerned about either party confirming a SCOTUS Justice in only eight days.
