Franken Looks Like Heavy Favorite for Re-election

Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) "looked to be a top GOP pickoff target next year after his agonizing seven-month recount and legal battle put him in the Senate in 2009 by a mere 312 votes," Politico reports.

"Yet, in a turnabout few could've predicted, Franken has yet to draw a Republican opponent. The GOP looks likely to choose between relatively unknown state legislators, inexperienced businessmen or a conservative radio host with a history of controversial statements."

2. This happens when one doesn't act like a republican

He is himself, and who he campaigned as, and voters appreciate that.

People who want to say how left leaning Minn is should remember that they had a repub governor and Franken defeated a repub.

Other senators (cough, Pryor, cough) would do well to remember that.

5. Bachmann doesn't represent the whole state

She represents a district into which the state legislature, in it wisdom, has gerrymandered most of Minnesota's nuttiest voters.

I'd love to see her run against Franken (licks chops).

7. So it's a rather small knot of nuts that keep her alive politically?

I suppose that's all it takes sometimes.

9. Don't know that I'd call them "nuts"

I live amongst the folks that elected Rep. Bachmann and they're not nuts. No, nuts doesn't even begin to cover it. The people that voted for and will continue to vote for Rep. Bachmann consider ignorance to be a virtue; stupidity a quality to which one should aspire. They give complete and total buy-in to the mythical Ronald Reagan and are so anti-Obama that if the President were to say that eating shit was bad for you, they'd say that they could produce reports that extol the virtues of shit-eating.

I am fortunate, however, to live in a small pocket of somewhat liberal thought. We even elected a member of the DFL (Democratic-Farmer-Labor) Party to our seat in the Minnesota House.

14. Hey neighbor!

I live here in the Minnesota Fighting 8th District. Scant miles from Bachmann's district: I lived there myself for a short time. I concur with everything you wrote. Add to that a healthy dose of "Stearns County Syndrome," and all is explained quite clearly.

I vote in the same precinct as our DFL rep!

Actually, not such a surprise. At least not for those of us paying attention. . .

That recount feels like it was just last year.

Boom. Almost 6 years have passed.

10. It's not an easy task to get ANY incumbent out.

Once they are in, they tend to be in for a long long time.

I think Senator Franken played it well by staying away from the press and not going on talk shows that aren't local. Yet he has written some decent legislation.

13. The GOP should draft Bachmann to run against him.

She wouldn't win, but it would be fun to watch. Especially their debates.

18. I Hope He Wins

Al Franken, yes the comedian, is a very smart fellow. And he is a tough son of a bitch who won't be steamrolled. If I were still living in Minnesota, I would be working for his re-election.
