Bigots evade being charged under the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001 (Australia)

FOUL-MOUTHED racists are escaping Victoria's controversial race hate laws with data revealing only three people found guilty under the Act in a decade.
Despite recent examples of bigots on Melbourne's public transport, they have all escaped being charged under the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001, which was introduced to crack down on such behaviour.
Senior police sources have told the Sunday Herald Sun the law is not being pursued because "it was too hard" to prosecute.
Data obtained by this newspaper from police shows 12 charges made under the laws since they were introduced. But only three people were sentenced under the Act, with the remaining charges struck out or not proven, Victorian Magistrates' Court figures show.
