(20,600 posts)let's just say both were very mainstream, and one was super popular with a lot of acclaim.

(3,731 posts)On my list of films to watch.
One of my favorite Vietnam war movies was Casualties of War with Michael J. Fox and Sean Penn.

(18,640 posts)they are not about Iraq/Afghanistan per se but combined they give the best feel for what being in an actual war is like, IME

(12,482 posts)the opening landing scene was unlike anything I have seen before or since.
sarisataka
(18,640 posts)did not remotely approach that and I never want to repeat what I have seen.
I have spoken to D-Day vets; if they speak of the landings you can see their eyes change. They are no longer here but there again. They remark the film cannot truly capture the sounds and smell of that battle
I cannot comprehend the horror.

I think it's about 4 hours long and very in-depth.

(1,113 posts)Only detraction is Col. Moore is played by Mel Gibson. The movie is excellent. Based on a battle in I Drang valley. Based on book "We were soldiers once and young" by Joe Galloway and Col. Hal Moore.

(12,482 posts)Gibson also directs it brilliantly - which is a perfect example of why I have to separate artists from their work in my mind. he's a big fuckstick, but a very talented one.

(369 posts)9th Company is a Russian version of Full Metal Jacket taking place during the last days of the Russian occupation of Afghanistan. It follows raw recruits from Siberia from their basic training to deployment in Afghanistan.
The last 10 minutes of the film had me on the edge of my seat. It is currently on Netflix.
