Man bites dog to save his wife after the animal rips off her nose

http://metro.co.uk/2013/05/05/man-bites-dog-to-save-his-wife-after-the-animal-rips-off-her-nose-3713469/

A man was forced to bite a dog to stop it from attacking his wife after it ripped off her nose in a horrific attack last week.

Caren Henry was walking her own dog, Kandy, when a 60-pound Labrador retriever mix launched itself at her, sinking its teeth into her thigh, stomach and face.

Her husband Laine was driving to pick her up from her walk in Madrid, Iowa, when he saw the attack taking place and jumped out to rescue her.

He revealed after the ordeal he had been forced to bite the dog to make it release its grip on his wife and their pet dog.

‘Caren turned and looked at me and I seen her face was nothing but blood, so I bit the dog literally in the nose and he let go and I grabbed our dog and I grabbed her and I put them in our pick-up and took off,’ Mr Henry said.

Mrs Henry claims she is lucky to be alive, saying her sunglasses may have prevented the dog from causing her even worse injuries.

‘It could have been so much worse,’ she is quoted by the Des Moines Register as saying.

‘If I hadn’t been wearing my sunglasses, I’m sure I would be missing an eye. If it had gotten ahold of my throat, I’d be dead.’

Does your dog bite?

I say yes, that is how he eats.

Any dog can become vicious, they are animals. One thing to remember, never get in between two dogs fighting. Unless you can quickly win the war. Otherwise, let them have at it. Step back and don't even yell. Drop your leash. And hope your dog wins.

Peter Sellers: "Does your dog bite?

Man: "No."

(Sellers bends down to pet dog and it bites his hand)

Peter Sellers: "I thought you said your dog doesn't bite!"

Man: "That is not my dog."

Bite them. Best way is to bite them over the crown of their snout. It is a great training exercise. Not too hard. It is how their mothers controlled them when they were pups. They grok it.

And the owner says, "He is nice and won't hurt you." Yeah right. I usually reply with, "I don't know your dog and your dog doesn't know me. Please keep it on a leash." The owners usually are offended, but we have leash laws to protect the dog and the people out and about.

Because that's how I think it should be handled. Your dog attacks someone, it's the same as if you did it. Period.

They kill someone, it's murder.

by who is involved. If Bill Gates dog kills you, it's a good bet that no charges will be brought, if your dog kills him, we'll never see your ass again.

BTW, it wouldn't be murder, it would probably be negligent homicide, criminal negligence, or similar.

to punish the owner of a vicious dog, or to compensate the injured couple.

And the owner is homeless, so this couple can't even get compensation with a civil claim for damages.

http://blogs.desmoinesregister.com/dmr/index.php/2013/05/06/woman-whose-nose-was-bitten-off-by-dog-released-from-hospital/article

A dog bit off part of Henry’s nose when it attacked her on a gravel road near Madrid in Dallas County on April 28. The attacking dog, a Labrador-boxer mix, also attacked Henry’s dog, Kandy, a 9-year-old beagle, and Henry’s husband, Laine Henry. Laine Henry said he bit the dog on the nose to force the animal to retreat.

SNIP

Laine Henry suffered a dog bite on his right arm that became infected. The infection has cleared up, and he has been OK’d to work. The Henrys are worried about how they’re going to pay for the expensive treatment for Caren’s nose. They have insurance, but must pay $10,000 out of pocket before coverage kicks in. She figures the bill will be much larger than that.

SNIP

The Henrys were attacked in rural Dallas County, which does not have a vicious dog ordinance the way many cities do, including Des Moines. This means law enforcement officials have no power to impound or euthanize an animal accused of attacking a human or another animal.

Do they have any laws against "dangerous tigers, lions, bears, people" walking the streets?

We've got to stop the irrelevant arguing about which breeds of dogs should be controlled and focus on the one and only cause which is negligent, irresponsible ownership.

Any animal large and strong enough to fatally injure people or livestock MUST not be allowed to
run at large. Pass and enforce the protection laws.

There might not be any laws against "dangerous dogs" in Dallas County, but there will be laws
against reckless endangerment. The owner of the dog in this incident obviously was endangering the citizens of Dallas County. His pet owning days should be over and his prison days should be beginning.

The dog was sleeping on the floor and she was lying next to him. She reached over and petted him and he attacked her. (No one knows why) She had many operations. The last time I saw her she was waiting on customers and was wearing a mask. However, I've heard she doesn't wear it anymore. I have a feeling the dog may have been dreaming and thought he was being attacked...who knows? But it was so shocking to hear it was a Lab.
