A newborn Chinese baby was rescued from a toilet pipe after he was flushed away by his parents, state TV reports.

Chinese firefighters found the tiny boy lodged in a sewage pipe below a squat toilet in an apartment building in Jinhua, Zhejiang province. His placenta was still attached.

Firefighters sawed out an L-shaped section wide on Saturday afternoon after neighbors reported hearing crying. The baby was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors cut around him to pull out the abandoned infant.

The 2-day-old child — named Baby No. 59 from the number of his hospital incubator — was reported in stable condition at a nearby hospital.

I don't understand what would possess people to do that to a newborn.

Esp. in China where it is easy to get an abortion.

2. They may have been wanting a girl

In China's cities, girls are often more desireable because you don't have to save up for their apt and/or vehicle in order for them to get married. Outside the cities, boys are more desireable.

4. China's one child policy has many dynamics

Initially it created a surplus of boys due to selective abortions and female babies being disposed of in all manners imaginable. Now females of traditional marrying age are a valued commodity which demand the boy provide a home and transportation for the girl as part of the marriage arrangement. When a boy is born, the parents and grandparents must start saving if they ever want their son to get married as they will be unable to do so otherwise. So if you give birth to a son, you must slave for the next 20 years or so to save the money required. If you give birth to a daughter, you are on easy street. Male children are still a valued commodity in rural areas due to farming, but people there can have up to 2 children without paying the oppressive tax. Those with means can have as many children as they want, provided they can pay the tax.
