Do you watch The ID channel? They keep showing these commercials about puppy mills

I just can't bear to look at them.

I change the channel -- quick.

They are so disturbing.

I have a couple friends who bought dogs from a woman who mated her dogs to death. They were Yorkies. All of the puppies died one by one -- only one from old age. And he had major health problems all his life.

My pets are all rescues. Even rescues are treated better than those owned by fucked up breeders.

Missouri Politician and Candidate Directly Benefits from Family Puppy Mill

If you live in Missouri’s 8th Congressional District you have a candidate with a really big blood stain on his record running in the June 8th election. Jason Smith, currently the Majority whip in the Missouri House of Representatives and running for Congress in the upcoming election, is closely connected to one of Missouri’s worst puppy mills. According to the March 2011 report from the Humane Society of the United States, “Update Report: Missouri’s Dirty Dozen Most of the worst puppy mills in Missouri are still licensed”, Smith Kennels of Salem, Missouri is one of the worst. And it’s no coincidence that the name of the kennel and the candidate are both “Smith.” Jason Smith is the son of Mary Ann Smith, the owner of Smith Kennels.

According to the HSUS report,” Smith’s Kennel has a history of repeat USDA violations stretching back more than a decade, including citations for unsanitary conditions; dogs exposed to below-freezing temperatures or excessive heat without adequate shelter from the weather; dogs without enough cage space to turn and move around freely; pest and rodent infestations; injured and bleeding dogs, dogs with loose, bloody stools who had not been treated by a vet, and much more.”

Jason Smith is not innocent here. He has been actively involved with the kennel in the recent past and has used his influence as a member of the party currently in control of the Missouri legislature to protect his mother’s business. “Mary Ann Smith’s son, now Republican Majority Whip Representative Jason Smith, was once listed in state records as a co-owner of her kennel and has been an outspoken opponent of Proposition B, the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act (passed by the voters in 2010 but negated by pro-puppy mill forces within Missouri government) and other animal welfare bills.”

So for everyone across North America who wondered how the puppy mills were able to do an “end run” around Missouri Proposition B which would have cured some of the worst abuses against dogs in puppy mills the answer is that the puppy mills have people like Jason Smith on the inside working against the will of Missourians to rein in the mills.

recently gotten a dog, and soon it was clear there were major health problems with the poor thing, the father complained, and the owner of the puppy misll said he'd replace the dog, which got the father (rightfully so) angry...he said it wasn't some washing machine or applicance you just just repleace...it was a living creature they had already bonded with. Stupid puppy mills...treat animals as commodities.

Educate others about the reality of puppy mills and the dogs they purchase from pet stores and the internet.

Puppy mills are puppy producing facilities that house dogs in poor conditions where they are bred and sold for profit. Many of these dogs are caged for years, bred continuously, and lack social skills because they receive no human companionship.

Once puppy mill dogs are no longer fertile, they are commonly killed, abandoned, or sold to another puppy mill. The result of puppy mills is hundreds of thousands of puppies, many with behavior or health problems, and many with little hope of ever being adopted.

Puppy mills exist because unsuspecting consumers keep buying dogs from pet stores, classifieds, or over the internet. It is up to us to spread the word and educate our friends and family about the reality of puppy mills.

1. Puppy mill dogs often have health and behavior problems.

2. Consider adopting from a local shelter instead of buying a puppy from a pet store or an internet ad.

3. Puppy mill dogs are raised in poor conditions and lack social interaction.

And it's even more disturbing when you realize a good-sized chunk of the humans out there accept this idea & support it.

look so horribly on the practices of forcing other human beings into slavery, caging them, forcing them to breed as much as possible, selling their children for a profit, and putting them down when they're too old to breed, and yet we still have people who make sure that doing its exact equivalent to other beings is quite legal and protected.

I do remember an uncomfortable conversation at some point in the past with someone who mentioned buying a puppy from a breeder. My response involved something along the lines of "Oh, when do you plan to separate and sell your family at market? I don't hold out much hope for the pedigree."

so I feel that I've done something in my own little way. And I give charitable contributions to dog rescue organizations. I rarely give to human organizations. The human ones are worthwhile. All charitable orgs are worthwhile. But the animal ones, esp the small ones, really struggle financially.
