Groups targeted by IRS pushed political activity boundariesIn other words, IRS agents were doing their jobs in investigating the applications of these groups. And at least a handful of the groups they were examining were carrying on partisan electioneering activities, even during the application process. The IRS was asking the questions it asked because it is supposed to determine that the primary activity of these organizations is social welfare and that can't be done by just looking at the money the organization might be spending in election advertising, as the examples the Times provides show. The problem with President Obama's and congressional Democrats' joining in on the Republican freak-out over the "scandal" is the possibility that the IRS will back off of the reviews its currently conducting, giving these organizations a free rein in 2014.

(9,457 posts)1. The Third Way (Wall Street) branch of the Democratic Party is outraged...
They like somnolent oversight of 501(c)(4)s just fine. As long as mega-donors can hide behind huge groups like Priorities USA, the Democratic Party will resemble the Republican Party on tax, trade, and regulatory issues.

(2,436 posts)2. Introduce legislation to amend the 501(c)4 exemption.
Turn everyone's attention to that legislation as the focus of fixing any perceived problem.
And publicly condemn anyone who tries to make more of this so-called scandal.
And promote the adoption of The Amendment:
It shall not be an infringement of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution for Congress to limit by law the raising and expenditure of money in connection with public elections.
