There's a banner in Central Florida warning of Gay Day in Disney

"Warning: Gay Days at Disney 6/1" banner flown over Central Florida

A plane with the banner "Warning: Gay Days at Disney 6/1" is flying around Central Florida.

This morning, the plane appeared to be making loops from as far north as Altamonte Springs to as far south as Belle Isle, but it was hard to tell from the ground. The "warning" is in reponse to "Gay Days" at Walt Disney World, a tradition where thousands of gays gather at the theme park.

The "6/1" referes to June 1, the day Gay Days is held Walt Disney World.

As my collegue Sara Clarke reported in today's Orlando Sentinel, Walt Disney World has a neutral stance on the annual event, though the company offers several items for sale during the weekend, including rainbow mugs and red tank-tops. (Many of those in attendence wear red in order to be recognized.)

My banner of "Get your tickets early!" works better when it directly follows the other guy.

Read the part where the 9 year old boy says the Boy Scouts should be like church, where everyone is welcome...then daddy spreads his religious poison.

Absolutely pathetic.

My almost 9 year old daughter would flip if I forced her to quit Girl Scouts. Thankfully, that organization has been accepting for a long time. I feel for these boys, who are so far ahead on acceptance of others then their parents. And the only reason to stay away from Disney June 1st is the heat and crowds. November is the best time to go, went that month during my honeymoon. Then went in May with the kids...too hot!

My family and two other families went last year during "gay days". We assumed the lines would be shorter because people would, in fact, stay away. I'm not a Disney expert and have only been two other times for comparison, but we all concluded they were, indeed, shorter. We had a great time. Saw some of the funniest costumes. A 50 year old, pot-bellied man with a mustache in a full-on Minnie Mouse costume - priceless! He told us it took him 3 hours to get dressed that morning. When my son told him he didn't look much like Minnie, he laughed and said "that's because I'm really Mickey in a dress, but don't tell anyone"!

We just figured the people in the park would either be LGTB and having a good time, or would otherwise be mostly people open minded about it - you know, democrats - thus making for a generally better class of folks and a much more pleasant experience overall. I think it cut down on redneck Bubba and church lady counts considerably. Our kids were all between 5 and 8 at the time, and had a blast. I keep looking for the severe emotional scars the experience inflicted on them, but so far they seem to be ok.

Smart ass about the reason for the plane, although it would seem like the lines would be longer on Gay Day or any kind of special day Disney has...maybe they're better organized those days.

This whole thing makes me somewhat happy that there's some asshat out there shelling out money to fly a plane which is only making people aware of such ignorance and intolerance that is out there. I hope it bankrupts him.
