Hey, people on welfare, conservatives would like you to know the rules. So here they are:

<skip>

1. If / when you lose your job, be sure to sell all your nice electronics and luxury goods immediately and make sure you are always dressed well in public (but not too well, because then you are clearly not in need of any financial assistance and will be judged for not immediately selling all your nice clothing, too).

2. Cover up your tattoos, or people will snark that you are spending your welfare money on body art, even if you have had those tattoos for years, or you have a friend who is a tattoo artist who did them for free.

3. Are your shoes nice? Better not wear them in public, especially while at the grocery store paying for food with food stamps, because you MUST have somehow magically converted those food stamps into enough expendable income to buy those shoes. Never mind that they were a gift, or you bought them years ago, or that they actually have huge holes in the soles and tattered insoles because you can’t afford to replace them.

4. As a bonus, be sure not to have a job with flexible hours or work from home or work as a stay-at-home parent, because judgmental people will be on your ass and assume you are on welfare based on limited or non-existent evidence (even if you are not) and whine bitterly about having to contribute to social safety nets for the needy. That is right: You don’t even have to be on welfare at all, you can simply be out in public with your kid(s) during normal business hours and have total strangers assume you are on government assistance if you don’t look prosperous. Isn’t that cute?

<skip>

5. sell your car, too, unless it is a Piece Of Shit, because clearly no one receiving unemployment benefits or welfare could possibly have purchased a decent vehicle long prior to losing a job, getting a divorce, having unexpected healthcare expenses that devastated their finances, or just generally falling on hard times. You also don’t ever want to borrow a friend or family member’s car if you DO sell yours to make ends meet, because if it is even slightly nice or of recent vintage, you will be judged as not being needy enough for assistance of any sort.

Rationalization is the key to their happiness.

We live in a materialistic society and materialism is zero-sum. So those with lots of toys always want more and dont want to give anything to the poor. That's why they seek rationalizations so they dont have to donate.

expensive. To me it always seemed like making addicted poor people poorer than they already are. I'm not in that boat. I smoke an occasional cigar that runs me at least six bucks. I tell myself I can afford it because I no longer drink competitively. On that one, I have the fat cats looking out for me somewhat.

Many take one look and think they know what is what.

Many seem not to takes into account such things as:

1) many a retail and cloths manufactures will donate items for PR/tax purposes.

2) That, yes many a poor have a phone, even nice ones. Many Corps. have jumped on to the, what is known as the " Obamaphone" program. This is a huge help for the elderly, those on the street, and those in dire economic circumstances to have the much needed communications that this world demands, especially for those that are desperately seeking any and all possible employment.

3) If you have a nice car, then you need to keep it. Many places, even with a well structured public transpiration system in place, even if you live 1 block (yes, 1 block), will not hire a person due to not having a vehicle. Many clam it shows responsibility to own a car, or that it is more of a guarantee one will be at work on time.

4) Many have computers they could sell. However, when even the Fast Food chains tell you that you need to go on-line to apply, it is a vital tool for employment. One needs to use it for placing the applications, receiving the emails, keeping track of when and where the application was placed, etc.
P.S. yes one could use the library, however the cost of going to the library everyday adds up. And many libraries only allow you 1 hour, unless you have your own laptop.

At last, many will see only what they want to see. It makes those that believe the "hogwash" feel morally better.

4. I am on food stamps and I bought a car last autumn.
Sat Jun 1, 2013, 08:32 PM
Jun 2013

It was a 17 year old Volvo 940. I like the four cylinder Volvos because I have a very long history with them (always bought used); they are awesomely safe; they have nearly unbreakable engines and transmissions and next to no maintenance costs due to extremely great design and reliability.

I paid less than 1600 for it, for which I saved my SocSec for seven months. I paid cash, and then spent a couple hundred more to get it ready for the upcoming MI winter. One doesn't mess around with those things here in my very rural national forest area.

So when I drive the 15 miles each way to the closest grocery store, a Meiers superstore right next to a Walmart (the only grocers within many miles), and use my food stamps, don't follow me to the parking lot and point fingers at me for driving a European car. First, walk a mile in my shoes.

I have been saving for a new refrigerator which went out about the time I bought the car. It's difficult when has to also buy heating oil to keep things comfortable. Alas, that too will come. I've been saving for the fridge for months, too.

Now, if the roof would only stop leaking, I'd be in pretty good shape.

It's where an entryway gable meets the main roof.

My house is a renovated well over 100 year old one room school house in a small farming community in the midst of the national forest in western MI. It's in tough shape right now, but it's a very robust structure.

I own it out right, so all I have to do is keep it heated in winter and pay the property taxes. The former is not optional; the latter I am perpetually behind.

One does what one can, when one can. After a lifetime of working in science, technology, and mathematics, it is sad to see what has become of these disciplines. No jobs here, and I cannot afford to move even if a company would hire me other than something like a WalMart.

Here, at least I have some comfort, of a sort.

Her car was a wreck. but we used some of that silicon filler and coated over the leaks. It was clear and was able to pick it up at wal-marts (so more than likely findable anywhere really).

It is a great temporary fix if are looking at some heavy rains in about 48 hours (Suggested drying time on the bottle).

Many will walk up to you in stores even. One today decided to ring me out. I got Kraft cheese due to it on a sale and was cheaper (Yeah sales!) for more slices. They told me I should only buy generic and stop wasting their money.

This happens so many times.

When I was on the streets, people saw me buy a morning Coke (can't buy coffee, it is a hot food) to try and wake me up (average sleep time on street is 4, 5 if you get a really good hiding spot, a night). They ranted on me for that.

I was yelled at "to get a job" at lest once a day, if not more, from cars passing by me.

No, the Haters make it real hard to not feel worse that you already do.

She has a beautiful purse - we bought that for her as well.

We've also bought her a washer and dryer, lots of clothes and food.

We do this because we love her and as her family, try our best to take care of her.

Why shouldn't she have nice things? Should she be punished because she is sick?

In my personal experience, there are PLENTY of lazy Conservatives. Plenty of unemployed Conservatives, too. Plenty of Conservatives who take welfare as well. But they *all* have reasons why it's ok in their case.

And if we count government salaries, Jesus-- it's practically all of them. Whenever someone starts talking about cutting government, I *know* they have a government job. I have yet to find an exception in my personal life.

I'm the only person in my extended family who works in the free market-- and the only one who doesn't praise it as a self-balancing wonder machine. I asked some of my relatives last Thanksgiving why they'd never bothered to sign up for those wonderful free market opportunities, and they just stared at me blankly. It's always *other people* who are the problem.

AZ has blocked Ice Cream from being bought. Many more things are on their way to the ban list.

And what is harder is that to eat enough calories on $200 dollars a month you need less that healthy foods sometimes. Not as easy to stretch as some would think. All food for the day must be between $6.45-$6.65 (depending on how many days are in the month or between pay periods).

21. The snarky game I enjoy
Sat Jun 1, 2013, 10:00 PM
Jun 2013

is to keep the locals where I retired guessing as to my financial status. They know I moved here almost 4 years before early retirement could be had, and they've never seen me with a job. I paid cash at auction for the most desirable house in town if you happen to like hundred-year-olds that need total rehab. Eventually I sold my car because it was clearly more economical to pay someone to drive for me a couple hours on weekly errands. Other than that I get around on a bicycle. Raise a garden. Read the papers at the library. Don't spend $ I don't have, and most of that slowly finds its way directly into crucial home improvement.

So the point being, while I'm sure many people don't give a fig either way, certainly not my small circle of friends and friendly acquaintances, those with nothing better to occupy their time can't seem to decide if I'm broke or well off or just tight or some combo. Now that the yard and exterior of the house at least show great improvement, a certain odor of jealousy wafts by on occasion, via snide remarks about who does she think she is anyway. Etc. More than a few catty remarks about my bike and no car. And what proper snob also walks? Tongues really wag when I happen upon a curbside treasure in open view and haul it home. One time I made it 4 blocks home on foot, carrying an antique iron bedstead some nut threw out. Add that to the fact of proud public Democratic Party support, and they know something's going on that they wouldn't like if they could just figure out what was at the bottom of it.

I hope this post doesn't stray too far off topic. Just wanted to say it can be fun to confound the eternally nosey who keep trying to poke their noses in other people's business. Small towns especially are notorious for that. If a person is able to gain a halfway decent and secure situation for retirement out in the sticks, though, I think it's worthwhile just to be shed of the even worse rat race. And it can be more fun than you'd think with the proper twist of mind. That's the ultimate crime, learning to live happily on a shoestring.

I'm not even on welfare but we struggle at times and I had a very wealthy person tell me we should only have 1 car since I'm a SAHM. Mind you, I live outside the city and technically every vehicle we have except 1 (9 years old) is for my husband's business. Also the person saying it is married to an insurance exec, also a SAHM and they have a BMW, Mercedes and Porsche in their garage. (At least 2 of which are "company cars&quot

What is it with the right that they don't realize that most of what they have is probably more due to good fortune than hard work? Why are they so unable to walk a mile in the average man's shoes let alone those who've hit a rough patch? And you know most of these people call themselves Christians!
