(5,185 posts)Who wants to cut food stamps but got 3.5 million in federal farm subsidies.
A Tennessee congressman who supports billions of dollars in cuts to the food stamp program is one of the largest recipients of federal farm subsidies, according to new annual data released by a Washington environmental group. Using Agriculture Department data, researchers at the Environmental Working Group found that Rep. Stephen Fincher, a Republican and a farmer from Frog Jump, Tenn., collected nearly $3.5 million in subsidies from 1999 to 2012. The data is part of the research groups online farm subsidy database from which the group issues a report each year. In 2012 alone, the data shows, Mr. Fincher received about $70,000 in direct payments, money that is given to farmers and farmland owners, even if they do not grow crops.
Is this entitlement OK in the eyes of tea partiers and conservatives who rail against big government? After all, it is a Republican and conservative who is receiving those entitlements. Do both of these instances equally upset you? If not, why not? If so, wheres the outrage?

(9,565 posts)thinking Marsha Blackburn (women don't want an equal pay law, hammers kill more than guns, let's look at psych meds before we ban guns), but yeah Fincher is evil. I'm in the Nashville area but if I ever hear of a fund raiser or speaking engagement for him i'll be there raising heck.

(5,185 posts)It made me sick to my stomach. A good chunk of my family lives in Tennessee and I enjoy the time I spend there, love the people but can't believe they voted for this guy even with all the corruption around him. Then again my representative used to be Steve King.

(9,565 posts)stopped going to church in record numbers because of guys like this. It's one thing to sell out poor people for the unearned profit of a few. Quite another to do it and claim to be a Christian. Shall I tell him if there are pearly gates St Peter is going to b$tch slap him when he gets there?

(12,448 posts)New Times is selling stories. They are the closest thing Phoenix has to left-wing media (plus 1480 KPHX Dr. Mike Newcolm's personal crusade, and good for him). Joe Arpaio is a horrible, corrupt, foul excuse for a human being.
But this story is political infighting between two overly aggressive assholes within the Sheriffs department and has nothing to do with animals. If you did know anything at all about Maricopa County, Phoenix, New Times, or John Dougherty, you would have some basis to make a valid judgment, but you don't.
You think the MCSO doesn't take animal cruelty seriously? Try living there and neglecting your animals, then get back to me and tell me what happened. Until then, you're just blowing wind out of some orifice.

(12,448 posts)Our whole family is heavily involved with animals in Maricopa County and one of that POS Arapio's deputies lives next door to my dad (the deputy shares our opinion of him as well).
Arapio is, as previously stated a foul, corrupt, horrible piece of shit who would, if zonies has any working brain cells, have been kicked out of office many years ago. But in this one single area he is good.
Gravitycollapse
(8,155 posts)I live downtown about a mile from the MCSO. I know exactly how they operate and I know that it is a common meme to use his supposed animal abuse record as evidence of his benevolence. In whatever capacity he does anything good for humans or other animals, it is either accidental or for the PR. The man is a habitual liar and a racist, hateful little piece of shit. He has absolutely zero capacity for sympathy or empathy.
Egalitarian Thug
(12,448 posts)you deal with Phoenix Police rather than MCSO.
But since you claim to "live downtown about a mile from the MCSO" I suppose you can tell me the last time you took in a pair of horses that the sheriffs brought to you after they were found imprisoned with no shade, no food, and a trickle water from a leaking hose for a week. Or maybe it was the 4 surviving dogs that they rescued from some west-side breeder that weren't too far gone and had to be euthanized. Oh wait, you haven't because you live a mile from 1st Ave & Washington and don't have the facility.
Here's a test you can try for yourself: The next time you see an abused animal, call the sheriffs and see who they take to jail, right after they take care of the animals.
You seem to think I am some sort of Arapio fan, I thought I made it pretty clear that that is not the case, but feel free to enjoy your delusion.

(108,713 posts)Yes he's a tool like Rand Paul in that he only exists to serve the needs of rich criminal assholes. The bigger problem is those that use their ill gotten money for ill gotten means like the Koch Brothers, they're much bigger fish to fry.
He didn't come up with his agenda all on his own. He's not smart enough for that, not by a long shot, but he's happy to take the money and do what he's told. I'm just disgusted about what he's doing to my state, so I have a personal loathing for the slimy weasel.

(41,453 posts)I think my most hated person in office is Iain Duncan Smith, Work and Pensions Secretary, and filled with moral crusading intensity against poor people, sick or disabled people, anyone on benefits, and did I say poor people? He seems to consider poverty as an addiction or result of poor lifestyle choices, to be cured by 'weaning people off benefits'. His viciousness toward poor people is not unique in the Tory party, alas; but his sanctimoniousness about it and fevered industriousness in pursing his aims are unusual.
A few years ago, he co-authored an article on 'Compassionate conservativism' with Rick Santorum.
There are worse people, such as Nigel Farage and especially Nick Griffin, but they are not in office. Oh and of course Maggie Thatcher whose abiding influence on this country and our leaders means that she still rules from the grave, and probably will for a long time.
In America? Of those I know about, possibly Scott Walker (and Rick Santorum but he's not in office, I think). And anyone connected with the Tea Party.
In the world? Too many people to mention; e.g. Assad; the Taliban; the genocidal maniacs in Darfur; those destroying the Congo; etc. etc.
