Getting better day by day and my constant muscle and joint pain is improving. Year and a half of constant sore joints and muscles and I finally had enough.

I'm in the process of tapering down my blood pressure medication. I take a steady dose until I start to black out when I stand up (and it gets worse the longer I stand) and that tells me to drop it down another notch.

My doc is not happy with me, but I brought in my meter with a blood pressure of 66/44 recorded in it and he reluctantly agreed that tapering down was what I needed to do.

Anyone who has started to kiss the floor needs to get it checked out. It could be anything from blood sugar to a massive infection in the blood to medication reactions to something funky going on with your heart.

Yeah, I'm a nurse and my friends and coworkers laugh me into next week about it, but I swear I can stick anybody else all day long, just DON'T STICK ME. Every single time, between my low bp (baseline is 90/60) and my getting grossed out at the sight of my blood in a bag and the needle (I try to look away....), it just doesn't work out. I decided that it was time to stop torturing the poor Red Cross folk after the last time (which was right after 9/11).

It was like I was falling down a hole, things went dark around the edges, then the dark contracted until I was unconscious. My friends freaked out and took me to the emergency room since it was only a week or two after I'd been knocked out by a horse at a show (struck in the face, out like a light). They thought it was a delayed effect from the concussion.

We never did figure out why I passed out. When we got to the hospital I was coming back around but hyperventilating, so the doctor attributed it to that. I was NOT hyperventilating before I passed out, though.

Actually, it was right before the first dance set. Wearing a suit, in July. Under a tent, but I didn't hydrate well enough that day. Started feeling a bit wobbly while getting ready to play. Next thing I knew, I was lying on the grass ten feet away, with everybody staring down at me, just like in a movie. In retrospect, that part was quite amusing. Luckily, I managed to fall the right direction, or I would have ended up with a large metal piece embedded in the back of my head.

After some Gatorade and cool towels to the neck, I was back in action for the second dance set. Needless to say, I make sure I hydrate fully now. It's still a running joke with the rest of the band whenever it gets a little warm.

So...yeah. It's hemophobia-related (fear of blood) so every time I cut myself shaving or chopping broccoli...I might pass out. Over and over and over.

It's a pain in the ass. Cut myself slightly. Pass out. Injure myself seriously passing out. Wake up. See how much I'm bleeding. Pass out again. Wake up in a small puddle of blood. Pass out. Ad nauseam. Literally...this cycle will repeat in 2-sec. intervals until I vomit instead of passing out or manage to get my head under cold running water long enough to be able to keep my consciousness long enough to stanch the bleeding.

I once managed to fall wrist-first into a piece of sheet metal and pass out six times leaving a smear of blood across my mother's new carpet as I crawled to the phone to call 9-1-1 because I nicked a vein.

I'm also obviously at increased risk of bleeding to death.

I have to be very careful standing up. Anything that causes dehydration - fever, hot weather, etc - just makes it worse. Sometimes it comes on for no damned reason - when i'm sitting perfectly still. Huge pain in the ass, but not life-threatening (that I'm aware of; I could theoretically stand up or otherwise move too fast, black out and crack my head open or something).

Low BP runs in my family...my mother and grandmother are/were very good at freaking out medical personnel because they register at-rest well below normal. My grandmother had syncope but my mother doesn't.

My BP as far as I know is normal. Yes, all those things seemingly make mine worse too, also not eating regularly. I don't always pass-out and never really know when I will or not. I've had serious injuries that I was fine and paper-cuts that dropped me like a stone.

Well, all doctors have a very hard time even hearing my BP (it has to be taken manually; those machines register it an as error). Yesterday it was read at 96/42, which is about average for me but a bit unusual since I have severe kidney disease (most kidney patients have very high blood pressure). I do know I'm the third generation to have optic migraines with the exact same visual disturbance/aura as vision is lost.

Fortunately for me, I'm only acrophobic. I can avoid heights pretty easily, but I am a woman, so avoiding blood is not biologically happening. Additionally, I am somewhat accident prone, to put it mildly.

I've only full-on passed out once, when I was eleven, looking at the gory dioramas at Little Big Horn National Monument on a hot summer day. Since then, I can recognize the symptoms (dizziness, lightheadedness, a certain kind of breathiness), and I just lie down on the nearest flat surface. It passes in a minute or two.

Never put your head between your knees -- it makes the problem worse. You need to get some well oxygenated blood to your brain. Leaning forward to put your head between your knees makes it harder to take a full breath and slows the blood flow.

I was listening to an excrutiatingly boring restaurant owner telling story after story at the check out. All of a sudden I just blacked out and fortunately fell towards the boring guy and he caught me. I came around as soon as he sat me down on a chair. Nobody was more surprised than me about that. It hasn't happened again and I don't stand in a locked position anymore.

You know how you see these pictures of soldiers at attention only one has pitched forward, out cold? That is why they train bands or military or anyone who has to stand for long periods to flex the knees often, don't lock them.

--"There are a few reasons why people faint, and standing for a long time in one position is one of them. This is called 'orthostatic syncope.' It happens even more if the knees are locked while standing, because the blood pools in the legs."

It was news to me too at the time. Esp if your knees are the type that lock back easily you do it without thinking. I've found it pays to be conscious of the tendency and practice staying loose and shifting your weight while standing and talking. On the odd occasion where I've felt that slight fainting sensation I realize my knees are locked & I haven't blacked out completely ever since.

i wasn't feeling well all day -- hadn't eaten much. i was on the phone with my granddaughter -- lying on the couch. we were having a normal conversation although at one point i started to cry -- talked about the last time i saw my husband alive. i said "i spend so much time lying in bed watching HGTV." i wanted to tell her about a show i've been watching and i got confused. i remember getting up and talking into the phone saying "steph -- are you there"? next thing i know i went into the kitchen to make something to eat when my friend and his wife opened my front door with their key. the alarm went off -- i had it set for "immediate" because i knew i wasn't going to open it again that night. he said "steph called -- we need to get you checked out". i said "i'm not going to the hospital -- i'm fine". he called my granddaughter. she had called the police before she got him -- she's in west palm beach -- i'm in phoenix". they directed her to the sheriff. howie (my friend) called the sheriff's office and canceled the call. they said they were busy with an accident. i had a glass with some juice out and they poured me more juice. i kept saying i was fine. my granddaughter wanted me to call her back. i said "tell her no -- it's almost midnight there -- she needs to get some sleep". howie said to steph "she's okay -- she's getting bossy". we decided it was probably low blood sugar. he and his wife stayed for a while then left -- she's a nurse and had to get up at 4:30 am.

yesterday i spoke to my granddaughter and she said she kept talking to me and i wouldn't answer. she said she was going to call the police. i have no recollection of any of it. i've come to the conclusion that i fainted. i don't remember hanging up the phone either. she said she kept calling me back and the line was busy. i must have been lying there with the phone still on.

i googled fainting and it seems it can be brought on my stress, not eating and that i could have confusion before it happens.

i knew as soon as the alarm went off that the security company would call. i had no problem remembering my password.

i've never fainted before, but have come close to it -- mostly when i was a kid in church especially fasting before receiving communion.

i haven't been eating the way i should since my husband passed last year and i spend so much time crying. i don't drink enough either. i'm forcing myself to drink water right now.

For awhile, I was taking BP medicine and kept feeling like I was going to pass out. When I went to the ER, my BP was dangerously low. I was totally shocked.

Sometimes BP medicine can cause normal readings in a doctor's office, but at home the BP can be different. My doctor recommended I purchase an electronic BP cuff.

I hope things get better. I would also be devastated if I lost my husband. I wouldn't know what to do.

It was a 100 F day and I was an altar boy at a funeral. The priest required us to wear nice clothes (meaning long sleeves and slacks) under the garments. Midway through the service the heat got the best of me and I just toppled over.

It would happen pretty commonly in the Army during reviews or change of command ceremonies. You get a few thousand guys standing at attention for hours and some are going to drop from locking their knees. They always had medics with stretchers at the rear of the formations for that reason. When I was in-processing into the army the guy behind me in the shots line passed out just as I was getting my shots. All I heard was "I don't feel so..." and by the time I turned around he had hit the floor.

I hope this was just an isolated incident and nothing serious for you.

I have a very high metabolism. Going w/o enough calories used to make me mentally deranged, then pass out..... Many Times. Now that I carry 135 lbs on my 5'6' frame (used to be 115) and am 48 yrs old I don't pass out as easily, but the mentally deranged part still happens. I have to remember to eat 6-7 small meals at least.

at the bottom of a ski hill as a teen. A few friends got on a sled quite a ways up the hill. They came down the hill really fast aiming for the crowd I was in. We decided to play chicken. We held on tight to each other. I wanted to escape and my boots were stuck a bit in the snow when everybody ran in all directions. Since I was going to be hit my body fainted. People told me that when I was hit by the sled full of people going really fast, I flew up into the air like a rag doll. I only recall waking up in people's arms with them asking me was I okay. I didn't even have a bruise.

I was standing up on a swing at a friend's house and my feet slipped off the swing and my hands went all the way down the chains (like a ropeburn). I got up and went in their kitchen, thinking I was fine. Looked at my ripped up hands and promptly fainted.

First and only time. Woke up and was fine.

If you don't know the specific cause why you fainted, please get it checked out.

I woke up early just to urinate, with the intent on sleeping another 4-5 hours after doing so, and during relieving myself felt light headed and nauseous. Right after I finished and went to return to bed, I didn't get 2 steps and vaguely remember a crashing sound, as if in a dream, but do not recall falling. Next thing I remember I was lying on the floor with blood on the floor under my face and a sharp pain in my gut. I evidently collapsed into a towel rack, which gave me a bad laceration on my belly and a nasty cut above my eyebrow. I have no idea why.

mostly related to naturally low blood pressure, along with some occasional defect in the blood pressure regulating system where, standing up quickly sometimes, I would black out.

Once I figured it out as a kid I watch out for it, usually just standing still for a moment and holding on to something (unobtrusively) is enough, and things go back to normal after a few seconds.

Wed Jun 5, 2013, 02:57 AM
Jun 2013

First I'll start with my brother. He fainted at work. Turns out he was extremely hypothyroid AND has some kind of heart 'issue'. We still don't know what it is, but he had an abnormal ECG and is currently undergoing continuous heart monitoring.

My SIL is a cop, and during training or any kind of ceremony that requires extended standing she always faints. Every time. She has low blood pressure generally so that's likely the issue. She says it's darn right embarrassing, she can't participate in any ceremonies because of it.

I used to get dizzy and lightheaded all the time as a teen when I would get up quickly. I had very low blood pressure at the time - so low when we were learning how to take BP in class the teacher was ready to call the hospital because mine was so low, lol. She redid it like 10 times and kept asking me if I felt OK.

The first time I actually lost consciousness, and this is so silly, is when I was getting my first tattoo. I was late for the appointment so skipped breakfast (NO one told me how big of a no-no this is). I fainted about 10 times until someone got me some juice and then I was fine. I was pretty sure it was low blood sugar.

The next few times were due to low blood sugar as well. Once I slipped on ice and fell, bending my elbow backwards on the way to a restaurant to have dinner. I hadn't eaten all day and I was certain I had broken my elbow. My now-ex took me to the hospital because I kept passing out. At the hospital I had X-rays and all was fine. The doctor said I probably whacked my head. I didn't think I had, but accepted it at the time. Then I fainted at home when I cut myself chopping up veggies for supper. Yes, I was famished then as well. Some juice and a short nap on the couch and I was fine, but it was scary because I think it was the blood that did it. Now I'm so nervous when I see blood!

I passed out after having a C-section with my last baby. I had never passed out after a C-section before, but I have a feeling the blood pressure drop from the epidural was too much for me, even though my BP was technically 'low-normal' it was so low compared to my pregnancy BP I think my body thought it was going into shock (well, and I lost quite a bit of blood compared to my other births, so that contributed).

Now, I understand you have recently lost your husband, and I read your post upthread regarding chills & hot flashes. First I will tell you that it's important to get everything checked out by a doctor (there's my disclaimer.)

I would guess that it's possible some of your symptoms are stress and grief. Sometimes you don't even realize how stressed you are. When my ex left me, I started having all kinds of panic attacks (which often don't feel like panic, you just get hot all over, or cold all over, or dizzy, or faint...or you feel like you are going to die, or your stomach starts 'sinking', or you feel like you can't breathe, or you want to vomit...or ALL of it at the same time) I had a few 'black out' episodes from the sheer stress and grief (he didn't die but it felt like the person I thought I knew never existed - he was living a double life - so I grieved as if that person I had loved was gone...) It took me nearly 2 years to stop having constant panicky feelings. Then I recently had a relapse. I won't try medication because I was actually ON anti-depressants when this all started and it made it worse (I put up with my ex's nasty behavior because I was numb thanks to the meds). Anti-anxiety exercises have made a world of difference, as has cutting out all caffeine. If I have a coffee, it's like setting myself up for a massive panic attack later in the day. I've come close to passing out at school (I had to go back to get a degree) and that makes it worse - then I get anxious that I WILL pass out - and the downward spiral starts. So caffeine is a no-no.

I know for me I'm sure cognitive behavioral therapy would help, but I just don't have the time or money at the moment. I'm sure that if your feelings are because of extreme stress causing panic attacks CBT would be of enormous help. I know it must be hard - do you have the amount of human contact that you desire? I know when I was at my most stressed, I craved human interaction and being alone for more than a day at a time drove me into a giant panic/teary meltdown. However, others want to isolate themselves. Everyone deals differently. It may be worth it to be proactive about what works best for you, even if it does take enormous energy in the beginning.

Just want to send hugs to you, and I hope your health is okay and that this was just a one-time episode. Take care of yourself.

ex who was not so nice either. we were married 2 years. my son was 22 months old and i got a call that he was arrested. to make a long story short, he did several armed robberies and went to prison for 2 years. we stayed together for 2 years after he got out, but then separated.

my 2nd husband was the complete opposite. was working for IBM for a year when we met. nicest guy -- wouldn't hurt a fly.

i've been anxious and a person who worries my whole life. when john was diagnosed with a brain tumor i asked my doc for ativan. i was getting panic attacks. i took it 3 times a day for a while but then weaned myself to 2 or 3 times a week. now i'm back to once a day.

i've been seeing a therapist who among other things does CBT. i'm isolated. i don't have friends here -- hard to make and keep friends when you have health problems. i have CFS/ME, IBS, herniated discs. several friends that i had years ago came down with health problems too. i have a few friends back in NYC. i feel crappy most of the time. i need a lot of sleep and get tired easily. used to love socializing, but also enjoyed my privacy. i do enjoy my own company, but also need some human interaction.

i was on anti-depressants for a while, but they made me nervous so i weaned myself off a few months ago.

i was definitely stressed when this happened the other night. i started to talk about seeing my husband alive for the last time and then seeing him dead. i was crying. i'm almost sure it was a combination of the stress, not feeling well, not eating enough. i have to make a point of eating even when i don't feel like it -- especially protein. i'm not a big meat eater and i don't eat cheese. i do drink boost but sometimes i feel like i'll barf it i drink it. i'm going to have to force myself to drink it everyday. today i brought home a rotisserie chicken and tried to eat as much as i could. the rest is in the refrigerator.

i went to sleep about 11:00 pm, but woke up at 12:40 and couldn't get back to sleep. that's why i'm up posting now. it's almost 2 am.

It happened to me when I went to visit my mother who was in the hospital for a long time and near death.

I'm scared to death of hospitals and I passed out when I got there. I was about 14 years old when that happened to me and luckily it has not happened to me since.

I am now in my late 50s and not in the best of health but no, I'm not fainting nor passing out luckily.

I would definitely get checked out. It could be from a medication you are taking or it could be due to all of the horrible anxiety you are feeling from the death of your husband.

I am very sorry to read about this. I hope you get better very soon!

I was being prepped to have blood taken for a physical I was taking when I was hired on to police department. I had these kind of physicals numerous times because I had been in the military, corrections, EMS and fire services. This time the nurse had problem getting a vein and proceeded to rub the inside of my elbow. I had never been squeamish, and like I said I've given blood more times than I can recall but there was something about that sensation of rubbing the inside of my elbow that made me sick. I immediately got tunnel vision and color was draining away from my face, sounds seemed distant and I'm guessing right before I was about to fall out of the chair on my face the nurse noticed my condition and immediately brought me back. Cool cloth on forehead and neck, seemed to bring me out of it. Not a fun feeling and I still get woozy just thinking about it.

I have seen people faint before. Particularly when I was in ROTC and the military. People would lock there legs when standing at attention for a length of time and it would cause them to pass out.

I was in a hospital at the time, thankfully.. Its such a wierd sensation...first every thing seems normal, than you get this sort of tunnel vision, and black out. I was found by a nurse and given orange juice and cookies.. while she checked my blood pressure. I won't go into the reason I fainted, other than it was seeing something that shocked my system so badly..I passed out.

I'm a diabetic but only blacked out a few times, I came to right away. I never was so unresponsive that I needed someone to call 911. I can tell now when I am low and the fainting will happen soon unless I have some kind of sugar. You feel shaky and everything darkens.

94. I passed out in formation once
Wed Jun 5, 2013, 10:52 AM
Jun 2013

Happened in the Texas heat. Quite the common occurrence.

Funny thing is that I was conscious the entire time. My body just said, "Whoa!" and my legs gave way. The person behind me caught me, thank goodness and I was carried to a waiting medic truck.

People pass out in formation all of the time. They tell you not to lock your knees, but even with your knees unlocked it can still happen.

One time, my girl and I were both ordered to stand in formation for a change of command ceremony. This was in June in the middle of a hot-assed Texas day. One of the color guard, standing next to the general fell flat on his face. They carried him off and continued with the procedures of course. Having passed out in formation before myself, I had a ton of sympathy for the guy.

When the ceremony was over and we all were dismissed, I realized that the sun dropped several of us. I then tried looking around for my girlfriend so I could walk back with her to her office. She was nowhere to be found.

Later that evening after duty, I caught up with her and asked her what happened. Turned out that the sun had dropped her too. They took her and a bunch of people to the clinic.

Personally, they should have held that damn ceremony in a hangar and out of the sun. But that was just one of a million stupid fucking things that happened at that base.

Standing under the hot Texas sun was no joke, I tell ya.

95. Yes. In a hospital when my sister came out of surgery.
Wed Jun 5, 2013, 11:04 AM
Jun 2013

I was SO embarrassed! I have white coat syndrome really badly and I am a total weenie!

My sister had gallbladder surgery and I'd not been prepared for how she was going to look when she came into recovery. She was covered by white blankets (which probably made things worse) and she looked very, very pale.

I felt lightheaded and headed for the corridor door to get out of the way of the nurses who were attending to my sister. Then all I remember is someone screaming "Why is that woman on the floor???!!!" and I realized that my head hurt. I had fainted dead away!

I was fine, but they made me sit in the corridor for a few minutes to make sure I wasn't going to drop again. Everyone was walking past me looking at me wondering what had happened, and I was embarrassed but none the worse for wear.

They offered me medical attention, but after being attended to for a while in the corridor, I felt I was okay. They also informed me that the nurses dealing with my sister should have been watching for family reactions, too, although I don't see HOW they are supposed to deal with a patient AND watch people in the room.

That was over ten years ago and I've not fainted since. I am more careful nowadays, though, when I am in a hospital setting, because I'm simply deeply affected by the sights and sounds obviously.

(Japanese Fencing in armor)

One of the standard things in Kendo is your right foot makes a "stomp" as you attack.

Well, every time I attacked, the stomp would give me shooting pains from the heel of the foot to the top of my head. I would literally see spots the pain was so bad.

Making attacks was worse.

I would make my strike with my shinai (bamboo sword) and wake up on the floor.

Turns out the head of the right hip femur had an occult fracture.

Everything was just sort of grinding against each other in there.

I totally sympathize with your fainting

Wed Jun 5, 2013, 12:07 PM
Jun 2013

brought on be an incredibly stressful time in my life.

on edit:

It happened exactly 3 times to me. The first was brought on by stress. And that night, I couldn't get warm enough, my GF literally piled every single thing in our house on top of me to try and keep me warm.

The next 2 times it happened was when I was urinating. (standing)

The Vasovagel nerve runs from the heart down to the groin. And somewhat like a natural pacemaker it regulates blood pressure and how it effects the timing with the heart. (this is how it was briefly explained to me)

And the syncope that drives it manifests itself in other ways as a well. The sight of blood and watching a woman give birth will trigger the same type of vasovagel reaction. But in rare cases, it will happen when someone (men) urinate standing up. (me).

The original stressful event triggered this reaction. However, it's been about 3 years now and it hasn't reoccurred. It was just one of those things. So now I manage the stress in my life much better.
