(10,942 posts)being a fucking traitor who abandoned his girlfriend to her own devices and police interrogation. I for one don't care whether my calls are monitored, I have nothing to be ashamed of or to hide.

(14,198 posts)I am smelling something that should be counted as treason against the U.S people.
And no, not with the White House.

(3,183 posts)"Within hours of Edward Snowdens revealing that he was the source of the stunning surveillance leak last week, thousands of people had signed a petition on the Obama White House website asking for a full, free, and absolute pardon for any crimes he has committed or may have committed.
We The People is a forum for which the White House staff promises to review any petition that receives 100,000 signatures within a month after being posted on the official government site.
Supporters posted the petition Sunday after The Guardian newspaper published the former intelligence workers name and an interview in which he explained why he leaked details of the National Security Agencys sweep of U.S. telephone traffic records.
The petition calls Snowden a national hero for blowing the whistle on the surveillance program.
The White House, however, disagrees."

(34,845 posts)I suspect that most of the cheerleaders for Snowden do not have an idea on how to answer that. All they seem to know is 'The government is evil'.
But I would be interested in hearing what it would take for them to feel like intelligence agencies are doing their jobs appropriately.

(46,179 posts)It's very limited, and easily manipulated thinking that has to break everything down into only two choices, in this case, "hero" or "goat." For me, this is not about Snowden, but about the abuses. I guess, if the abuses of your hero can be categorized as "legal," you have no other option than to attack personalities.
As Cali said, "You have to be utterly ignorant of history, in a state of denial, dumb as grits, or partisan to the point of mindlessness, to believe that the 16 major national security agencies aren't to some degree or another abusing their powers."
I don't have to approve, nor disapprove, of Snowden to be glad that this issue is finally getting the attention it deserves.

(17,298 posts)if you are dealing with classified National Security information.
I spent 29 years in the Navy, including quite a bit of time as a Security Manager with one of the highest clearances you can hold.
You know what you de if you think things are being "over-classified"?
You know what you do if you think someone is over-reaching?
You're trained to go to the Inspector General, or to contact Congressional Staff, or to bring it to your Top Secret Control Officer.
What you don't do is illegally copy classified documents and pass them to a foreign news organization, or hide out in Hong Kong.
This guy has done more damage to our National Security than Warrant Officer John Walker could have ever dreamed of.
He needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Neither you, or I, or Edward Snowden gets to decide "what's best for our country", or "what classified information the public has a need to know".
I will say this as emphatically as I can...."This Snowden guy is a traitor, and he needs to be prosecuted as a traitor".
Yes DU, it is possible to commit treason against your country...and this guy has done so
