Sandusky lawyer: Showers were lessons in hygiene.

The newest attorney to join the Jerry Sandusky defense team says that the former Penn State football coach showered with young boys because the kids lacked basic hygiene skills and needed to be taught.

Sandusky is charged with more than 50 counts of child sex abuse against 10 young boys and he has repeatedly admitted to showering with children he mentored through his Second Mile charity.

"Some of these kids don't have basic hygiene skills," attorney Karl Rominger told abc27 News Tuesday. "Teaching a person to shower at the age of 12 or 14 sounds strange to some people, but people who work with troubled youth will tell you there are a lot of juvenile delinquents and people who are dependent who have to be taught basic life skills like how to put soap on their body."

Rominger later clarified his statement to NBCPhiladelphia.com's Lu Ann Cahn.

"The question was, 'could you come up with any possible explanation why an adult male would be in the shower,' and gave a possible explanation," Rominger said.

To defend his client his utmost, but that excuse redefines the term "lame."

I recall practicing the piano keyboard on a cardboard dummy.

At any rate, no one is fooled by the lawyer's weak defense. You're sure about that souffle, though?

Given the formidable task of representing this predator, he finds himself grasping for anything that may pass as a reason to get paid at the end. I'm not sure Charles Manson's lawyer had to work this hard.

Fortunately for him, the trail system doesn't employ the same laugh track they used on Night Court.

"wash your ass."

I doubt that's what he had in mind, though.

I still think they're going for an "incompetent" strategy, though:

Rominger also told NBCPhiladelphia.com that Sandusky would be checked for organic brain injury that could be responsible for the way Sandusky talks.

Anytime anyone says anything about ass washing, I can't help but recall that routine.

I don't think it'll fly too well at Sandusky's trial, however. You have to wonder what his dumb-ass-washing lawyer was thinking?

I don't know what angle Sandusky's lawyer is trying to play, but I suspect that in the end, Sandusky will be sentenced to, and die in prison. His will not be the only head to roll. The whole coverup from the top down just disgusts me. It pains me more that anyone actually defends Joe Paterno (whose grand jury testimony was read today) did almost nothing to prevent the offenses (alledged) from re-occurring.

The first lawyer is often a turkey, but two in a row?

It's one thing to vigorously defend one's client, but to toss out desperate excuses that sound terribly like "I was washing his ass with my penis" is just NOT helpful to any sort of defense.

Unless...the lawyer is doing this sort of thing early and often, in order to give Sandusky a shot at an "incompetent defense" appeal when he loses the case decisively.
