I wonder what caused it to happen.

I like the name they've given the kitten : Deucy !

There are genetic oddities with some cats. Scottish Folds for example all go back to one single feral which a farmer had notice had abbreviated ears with a clear downward fold.

Unfortunately the same defect can also cause severe skeleton problems with folds.
