With the completion of the case of Floyd v. The City of New York, the DOJ is reportedly anticipating a ruling that would end Mayor Bloomberg's unconstitutional stop-and-frisks in the near future.
"Lawyers for the stop-and-frisk challengers noted that this "hit rate" was lower than in the case of a car random checkpoint protested in Indianapolis v. Edmonds, in which police seized drugs in 5 percent of all vehicles.
"... observers expect the civil libertarian judge to appoint a monitor to oversee the NYPD.

"The DOJ has put in place similar agreements with other cases alleging widespread unconstitutional policing practices," the rights group (known as the Center for Constitutional Rights) said in a statement. "It is high time the city of New York and its police department stop their obstinate non-compliance with the law and accept that the kind of significant change necessary to fix the problems with the NYPD's stop-and-frisk practices will require outside monitoring."

If the DOJ wants real reform in New York with respect to Bloomberg's attacks on the Constitution, including using his private army of cops to deliver unnecessary and excessive violence to peaceful Occupy Wall Street protestors, the DOJ should prosecute and put Bloomberg in prison.
By what right does he openly disregard the 4th Amendment with his stop-and-frisk practices? A Federal prosecution of Bloomberg for intentionally violating the Civil Rights of those in NY, however, will never happen. Holder knows how to protect the interests of the super-rich.

We should all remember the words of George Carlin, "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups. "

(22,457 posts)was a joke.
They can only stop the black person if they think they have committed a crime, are committing a crime or are going to commit a crime.
But over 88% of the time they made no arrest. Sounds like the idiot NYPD cannot judge reasonable suspicion very well.
Face it, they was a way to just keep black youth in NYC on the edge and a way to harass them.
It needs to end and a class action lawsuit needs to pay these illegally stopped people money. A lot of it.

(11,064 posts)frustrated cops otherwise meet frustrated citizens minding their own business and then deliver a little unnecessary violence to someone who was "resisting arrest," find a little marijuana or another drug of choice, or find a drop weapon?
If the claim is made by the NYPD or any apologists that such events never happen, that's inherently incredible.
Even when they let citizens ultimately leave without any charges being filed, how many times did the NYPD deliver unnecessary violence?
