(5,477 posts)Meanwhile, I've been tracking the price of broccoli for the last six years. In 2006, broccoli crowns were $1.50 - $1.80/lb. They are still exactly in the same price range seven years later.
DainBramaged
(39,191 posts)did you know insects pee on your broccoli? Dogs, cats, mice, moles, birds poop, no one is safe..........
And it sounds just as foolish as your chastising those of us who love Oreos.

(29,503 posts)obviously, you're entitled to your opinion, but the flour is a simple carb to which they are required to add vitamins BACK IN to the final product, lol. The canola oil is likely from GMO ingredients. Cornstarch, certainly not good - again, a simple carb, this time without any added nutrients.
The only ingredient I think of as 'good' automatically here is the cocoa and chocolate - but if you are aware of how cocoa beans are grown and brought to market, then even THAT is a debatable point.
Enjoy! (obviously, this is not an earth-shattering matter, and I tuck in to stuff like this on occasion, even Oreos.)

(51,122 posts)To say my tastes have matured is an understatement, unless they purposefully added the taste of moldy cardboard to the recipe.
they look feel and taste like they have been in a cupboard for 10 years
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)but they have definitely changed how they make Chips Ahoy - I just don't know if the moldy cardboard was intended or a by-product of something else. They are also much smaller cookies. I think that was a product of each cookie being stepped on by sweaty goblin feet right before it goes into the package.

(103,856 posts)Since our boys are grown up, I rarely buy stuff like that, but about a month ago I saw them & thought why not.. Now I know why not ...ugh.. I actually threw the package away..
Even Oroweat has "improved" their pricey Oatnut bread to the point that I cannot justify buying it anymore.. It used to be a substantial bread & now it's flimsy and pretty tasteless..

Never liked Chips Ahoy. Any home baked chocolate chip cookie is superior at a fraction of the cost. We make the dough, scoop it into balls and freeze them. The kids bake a tray full (or two) whenever they have friends over.

(12,781 posts)But there's nothing wrong with two (three if you're older) Oreos and an 8-oz of milk as a mid-afternoon treat, interchangable with the same amount of Fig Newtons. That's how I grew up (well, whenever we had money).
Never gained weight as a kid - or as a working adult - eating that way. So a 15 oz bag isn't half bad if you keep your serving size down to two or three a day.
It's scarfing down the 2-serving 6-pack of Oreos in the gedunk machines twice a day that starts to cause weight trouble.

(9,213 posts)Our local Target had Oreos on sale a few weeks ago for 19oz for $1.99 so if you shop around you can definitely find deals.
The problem is that everywhere has sales on different stuff and MOST people don't look for sales and pay attention to what they're paying for which items and plan ahead, so most people pay the normal price for stuff, subsidizing it for the rest of us who DO do our homework on this stuff.

(1,557 posts)A gallon of bleach reduced to 3 quarts. 1/2 gallon of ice cream is now 1.5 quarts. A 5 pound bag of sugar is now 4 pounds. Cans of soup reduced to 10 3/4 oz, when they used to contain 14. (May not be the right number exactly, but I have recipes from several years ago that would call for one can of soup at about that measurement.) They think we don't notice, but we do. Everything is being slowly reduced in weight and size but the price remains the same or goes up.
And that's the larger point I wish the OP had made, because the discussion is devolving into what's bad to eat. Yes, we know we shouldn't eat it, but we're being shafted and not just because some of us have the bad habit of consuming processed foods. We're paying MORE for LESS.

(23,156 posts)incredibly easy. Okay, so making a sandwich cookie like oreos would be more complicated, but still.
I live alone and I like to bake, so occasionally I'll make cookies or a cake and bring it in to work. It's genuinely embarrassing how much my co-workers love what I bring. It's obvious that they have rarely, if ever, had something made from scratch. My stuff doesn't have that chemical taste you get from mixes.
Cookies tend to freeze well, so sometimes I'll selfishly make an entire batch of chocolate chip cookies for myself and freeze them, taking out one at a time. Yummm.

(29,503 posts)Those are essential foods.
It's another entirely to complain about a junk snack food that, @ $4.99 per pack, costs as much as the daily food budget for many poor people in the US (if they are on food stamps).
Essentially, Oreo's are a non-essential fun food that could be considered a luxury.

(22,541 posts)I don't make my own pasta. Most people don't when they can get a really good organic whole wheat or spelt or brown rice (my favorite) at the health food store. But when you grab your usual brand and take it home to make baked ziti, only to find it's 12 oz instead of 16 oz in the same size damn box, it can piss a person off.
DevonRex
(22,541 posts)Remember half gallons of ice cream? Now they all have tapering containers with lids. As if we don't know that the tapering cuts out the ice cream that used to be there.
And a pound of coffee? Even spaghetti and other pasta. If your recipe calls for a pound, for baked ziti or something, you have to make sure to check the box. Because your usual breaks might have suddenly changed to 12 oz. It makes a difference.

(26,621 posts)to containers that make it harder to extract all of the product - all I can figure is that they're encouraging waste to make you buy more. Tapering containers, squeeze tubes with big rigid tops, oddly shaped tubs etc may look distinctive, but I often end up dissecting them to get the last bit of what I already spent too much on.
As for the stealth inflation, it would be interesting to know if there are patterns in the products it gets applied to: mostly junk food? Mostly staples? Broadly distributed? We've specifically noticed it affect us in coffee, sugar, cereal, and bread...
