Paula Deen goes complete racist....(and like most racists, she doesn't

even realize it.

Cooking show host Paula Deen has come under fire for pushing a version of Southern cuisine that emphasized fat, salt, and sugar rather than health, and for becoming a spokeswoman for a pharmaceutical company that makes much of its profits from insulin after she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, even though her core cooking business was arguably creating new customers for diabetes drugs. And this week, Deen found herself tipped from the frying pan into the fire this week after a deposition surfaced in which she discussed her use of the term “nigger” and discussing her vision for a “southern plantation-style wedding” that would feature black servers.

Deen was deposed as part of an employment discrimination case in which a former restaurant manager, Lisa Jackson, suggested that Deen said things like, “Well what I would really like is a bunch of little niggers to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around,” and that her remarks were part of a pervasive discriminatory environment.

Americans actually DO think that way.

I kind of have a weird respect for Deen. You know - as a black American - I wouldn't want that targeted at me.

But at least she is HONEST.

A lot of people think it - but just 'wrap it up' in 'advisement' that I'm uppity, or they were shocked I've never had children, or that I was married, or have a college degree.

At least she comes right out and says it instead of trying to dance around how I'm not "black like that". Give the woman credit for honesty.

And she was still hiring black people. She might be a bigot -but she's not a racist and impacting blacks economically.

she claimed she always promoted moderation which was complete and utter bullshit if anyone had ever seen her show or read her cookbooks (I have!)

She had the opportunity to be honest about it but nooooooooooo she decided to make a buck or two instead. Why should I believe she is being honest about this?

She may not be racist but she certainly is not honest.

I live in an area with many PGH transplants and can spot them right away. I'm from SW PA, but moved to the DC area as a child and lost the accent. Well, for the most part -- it still comes out with certain words and expressions. Slippy!

Where did you grow up?

Because in 1981 Corey Bower called my mother a 'nigger lover' on the playground and I beat the shit out of him. The loser boy a full head bigger than me and held back in school two years got his ass handed to him by a girl.

All because he kept cracking on her about being a zebra and calling her mother a 'nigger lover'.

You must have grown up with him - because Nigger is a hateful vicious thing where I come from.

And it is never harmless.

She also is far more visible and 'accepted' than he is.

And that makes her very very dangerous.

"They" don't believe they are racist because they won;t allow themselves to ever really think about their actions/beliefs.

Public figures can suppress their true beliefs for a while, but eventually it catches up to them.

My friend summed it up for me.. He said when he was young (Alabama) he grew up KNOWING his place in society and he knew his "enemies" because of the way they treated him , his friends and his family, but after Civil Rights and many moves north and west, he grew accustomed to not knowing...suspecting always, but never really knowing until a situation became dangerous.

He also said that raising HIS kids was actually harder than the raising of him and his brothers & sisters...back when things were truly black & white. He & his wife have 2 sons & he said that when they were young (the boys) they had a multicultural group of friends, but it was paramount to teach them about the dangers of DWB and they THEY had extra things to learn than their friends did. (dealing with the law).

Being a black teenaged boy is very dangerous no matter where you live. He once said that having grandchildren was his most prized "accomplishment" because it proved that he & his wife succeeded in keeping their sons safe & alive long enough to grow up & become Dads. (One's a lawyer..the other a businessman)

I see that all the time here in KCMO. So many of the older people here came up during a very racist time. That racism goes deep in their consciousness and they know it. And they don't like it. But it's there and I don't know anyway you can overcome something like that. So they overcompensate. Try too hard to be nice or understanding or whatever.

They aren't awful people just the product of very different times.

Not everyone from the south is a racist, but she sure sounds like she is.

She always came across as very phoney to me. I don't watch her on television unless she's on something that happens to be on, but I've always thought she was putting on an act for the cameras.
