Old friends, old friends
Sat on their park bench like bookends
A newspaper blown through the grass
Falls on the round toes
Of the high shoes of the old friends
Old friends, winter companions, the old men
Lost in their overcoats, waiting for the sun
The sounds of the city sifting through trees
Settle like dust on the shoulders of the old friends
Can you imagine us years from today?
Sharing a park bench quietly
How terribly strange to be seventy
Old friends, memory brushes the same years
Silently sharing the same fears
Time it was and what a time it was, it was
A time of innocence, a time of confidences
Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph
Preserve your memories, they're all that's left you
SIMON AND GARFUNKEL - OLD FRIENDS/BOOKENDS
I never quite understood it, I was in my teens, I loved the melodies. Now, as I careen into my senior years, I understand.
Time passes so quickly.
Preserve your memories
they're al that's left you.
Thank you.

(16,993 posts)I discovered that two different places, in two different cities I lived in when I was younger, are now gone. One torn down in the name of progress and the other done in by a Hurricane a few years back.
Both had been bulldozed years ago, but I felt a loss knowing that those places where I had had so many good memories were now gone.
Memories are all that are left now.
I'd always thought I'd go back and visit again, but now it's too late. Thanks for the post.

As you have done, I've gotten older and looking back, they have a depth of meaning I could not comprehend when I first heard them or when I often listened to them when I was younger.
Age makes one wistful. Memories are sweeter when soaked in the wine of Time.
