Democrats win two big victories in Oklahoma special elections, including first GLBT state senator.

Democrat Curtis McDaniel picks up a very red State House district that gave Obama 26% of the vote. Democrat Al McAffrey becomes OK's first openly gay state senator.

Senate District #46 that was just won by an openly gay man was once held by a raging homophob named Mary Helm. In the late 70s she introduced an "anti-homosexual teachers bill" modeled after the then famous California bill. The funny thing (or stupid thing on her part) is that district has a very large number of LGBT households. We organized and got her booted in the next election (1979) when our candidate Bernest Cain was elected and he held the seat for many years until he retired. Meanwhile, the state senate has become more and more conservative and republican over the years.

I wonder where Mary is today? She will have a shit fit.
