Viral Video Appears To Show Hawthorne Police Fatally Shoot Dog
HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) A video posted online apparently shows Hawthorne police officers fatally shooting the dog of a man filming a nearby barricade situation, an attorney said Monday.
The undated video posted June 30 on YouTube shows a man driving up to an apparent police barricade at 137th and Jefferson and then stopping to use his camera to capture images of the scene.
Attorney Michael Gulden said his client Leon Rosby was watching and taking video of the Hawthorne SWAT team when police claimed Rosby was obstructing officers during the barricade.
Rosby is seen in video footage walking with the dog which appeared to be a Rottweiler near several patrol cars to capture the scene on his phone.
After an exchange with nearby officers, Rosby is heard saying the words, civil rights violation before returning the dog to his vehicle.

(13,081 posts)That we will see a huge spike in these videos for about ten more years. It will take a generational shift before cops (and I'm using that term in polite company) realize that the surveillance state works both ways.

(13,985 posts)The dog was off leash and being aggressive. The owner got his dog shot. I'm not a fan of the breed and I detest the type of person that would own one. But I hate to see even a worthless (at best) dog go out hard because his owner is an asshole and gets him into a bad situation.

(8,912 posts)The shooting of the dog could ONLY be defensible if the underlying arrest of its owner had been legally justifiable in the first place, and it clearly was not. They charged the man with impeding an investigation -- which he very clearly was not doing. I am rendered speechless that anyone on this site would defend this.

The ONLY one that can be held blameless is the one who's dead - the poor dog.

(13,812 posts)The cops are pieces of shit:
A) for harassing him
B) for shooting his dog
I hope there is a special place in hell for shitbag cops.

(56 posts)So are you saying someone exercising their rights is dumb? Or are you just saying you think our constitution is dumb?
I find it rather disgusting that a fellow American would judge someone a dumbass for having done nothing wrong.

(8,912 posts). . . the owner put the dog into his car. Obviously he didn't want there to be any problem concerning the dog. He likely forgot that the passenger side window was open to a sufficient extent to let the dog out. Asserting moral equivalence between the dog owner, who was guilty of nothing more than forgetting about an open window in his car, and police who arrested him for no legal, valid reason whatsoever, is just appalling.

(3,829 posts)It's the dog owner's fault. He's an f'n asshole. I can't watch the video, though.
If you had watched the video. Here's what you would see. It is safe to watch the first three minutes of the video. Enough time to see you're wrong about the guy.
At no time in this video before the guy is arrested do you see him refusing anything from the police. Keep you eye on the two police officers who end up walking toward him and arresting him. You'll see no concern from them regarding this guys car stereo. Only AFTER they see him video taping them can you tell they are deciding to confront this guy.
The car stereo is just something after they viewed this youtube video as a convenient excuse for their actions.
At 0:24 you'll see cops go into the house where they were investigating.
At 0:40 you'll see two police officers walk across the street away from that house and just a few yards away from the guy and his car and they say nothing. They don't even look at him as they walk away from him.
At 1:37 those two police officers have just turned and started looking at the guy video taping. You can see they are not saying anything to him. They are just looking at him video taping them. It looks like they are deciding whether or not to go harass this guy.
At 1:53 one of those two police officers starts walking toward the guy video taping them but then turns around and goes back to where he was standing.
At 2:09 the guy video taping starts to take his dog to his car. The cops at this point are still just standing around.
At 2:13 as the guy is walking toward his car to put his dog in the back seat he looks back at the two police and sees them still just standing there.
At 2:14 a second after seeing the two police still just standing, the two police start walking towards the guy who is still putting is dog in the car.
At 2:27 the guy shuts the door on his car after just having put his dog away and starts walking toward the two police officers walking toward him.
At 2:34 you'll see the police officer on the right gesture with his hand and say something to the guy who was video taping. This is the first time in the video you can tell the police said anything to this guy. From the video obviously what the police officer told him was to turn around and put his hands behind his back. Which he complied.
At 2:35 the guy video taping turns around and puts his hands behind his back and the police handcuff him.

...and at 2:46: Rodney King.
And two songs:
Like a king, like a king, like a king
Rodney King, Rodney King, Rodney King
Like a king, like a king, like a king
How I wish you could help us Dr. King
Make sure it's filmed
Shown on national T.V.
They'll have no mercy
A legal lynch mob
Like the days strung up from the tree

Like a king, like a king, like a king
Rodney King, Rodney King, Rodney King
Like a king, like a king, like a king
How I wish you could help us Dr. King

(1,241 posts)but it's still a cop. I'll paint it with a broad brush, They are ALL fucking scum. If there is a good one and he doesn't say nothing about his scummy brother in blue, he is just as scummy. And that's what they all do.

(44,397 posts)A California woman blamed overzealous bloggers for mistakenly putting her at the center of the far-ranging outrage concerning a police encounter that ended with officers shooting and killing a mans dog.
One asked me if I was HIV positive, Lori Wiest told the Daily Breeze of the deluge of angry phone calls and emails her business has received. One asked if I was a member of the Illuminati. They are asking crazy things. Its just been hell.
Wiest told the newspaper the phone number and address for Wiests business, Swains Art Supplies in Glendale, California, were distributed online by multiple sites calling for the resignation of Hawthorne Police Chief Robert Fager, in the mistaken belief that they actually belonged to Hawthorne police spokesperson Lt. Scott Swain.
It spread like wildfire, Wiest told KCBS-TV of the onslaught. The fact that people believe what they read and then they posted our phone number and address on there.
The information was allegedly posted in response to one of Fagers officers shooting and killing a rottweiler belonging to 52-year-old Leon Rosby, who police accused of obstructing them during a SWAT standoff on June 30. Swain was not involved in the encounter, but he told the Breeze he had to buy a new cell phone after also being harassed.
