I'm clearly not happy about no witnesses being called during the Senate trial. However, I do think the Managers did a great job. I would have loved to see trump convicted, but....
Let's think about something: in order for trump to get the acquittal, he had to throw the MAGAts under the bus. In fact, through his lawyers, he did that during the trial. I didn't watch the entire trial, but I did catch instances where trump's lawyers slammed the insurrectionists. That, plus the fact that hundreds of insurrectionists are facing criminal sentences with no pardon from trump, strongly suggests to me that the MAGAts can't be happy with trump. He left them to twist slowly in the wind.
Non-MAGAt Republicans like McConnell despise him also. And of course we Ds despise trump.
Isn't that another way of ruining trump? He effectively has no group who supports him except his henchpeople. So has he, in effect, been informally impeached and convicted?
Thoughts? Happy Valentine's Day!

(7,715 posts)BUT, didn't he slam them during the trial and not pardon his insurrectionists? Clearly, these people aren't capable of thinking, but I would assume they can't be happy with trump since January 6. Yesterday's result amplified his abandonment of them.
I am not saying white supremacy has been stopped. What I am wondering, though, is whether trump will continue to be their leader. If not, someone will clearly take his place. But it won't be trump, or so my logic suggests.

(25,597 posts)Hawley and Cruz among them. But until Trump is out of the picture -- and I don't believe that's the case yet -- Despicable Donny is still the cult's hero.

(40,790 posts)Trump comes out of the trial downsized, with R-Senators either voting to cut the cord, ripping him as McConnell did or distancing themselves from him. The fact that only seven of 50 voted against him shows they fear losing his voters more than aggravating him personally.
The good political news from our POV is their votes mean we still get to hang Trump around their necks. This as Trump continues to die a slow legal and PR death through investigations, trials and disclosures that are still to come.
The GOP have miscalculated. We gave them a get out of jail free card and they said meh, wed rather have it both ways. It shouldnt be hard for Democrats to deny them the pleasure.

(7,715 posts)But I tend to agree. Yesterday, I was down in the dumps about the results. However, this morning, I don't think trump is a "winner".
We clearly have a large number of white supremacist voters. But they are in the minority and they have, IMHO, been stripped of their leader. Yes, Hawley or someone might take his place if I'm right, but my specific point in this OP is that trump won't be that leader.

(40,790 posts)And that will be to our advantage.
In the meantime, we can saddle them with the Party of Trump label.
Trump is an old man facing a mountain of legal and financial problems. Hes a diminishing asset. The GOP have miscalculated, but its up to our party to turn the screws on them with our messaging and aggressive investigations of both Trump and the terror groups he inspired.

(8,228 posts)It should have been open and shut, near unanimous. Can you imagine Charles Manson being acquitted? That's what we have here.

(7,715 posts)We have been disgraced and humiliated all over the world, and this does underscore that.
I am hoping, though, that President Biden can help change that.

(7,715 posts)And I am furious at McConnell for voting to acquit. And while we can be cynical about what he said, he SLAMMED trump to the high heavens. Maybe it's too early on the "day after", but I'm not seeing Rethuglicans jumping on a trump bandwagon.
That's what is making me a bit happier. The result sucked, but maybe there are silver linings to all of this. I still think the Ds could have let the trial continue, but perhaps the D Congress is wiser than me...
The best thing is we have Joe and Kamala!

There was a chance to remove the cancer. It is still there , and may grow.
Whether he can run for office may be irrelevant.

(8,514 posts)I agree with you, and will add that we got a LOT of ammo to use against repukes for the 2022 election and beyond.
I hope that we capitalize on the fact that repukes were worried more about getting re-elected than in doing what was right. They've lost all credibility when it comes to being adherents to "law and order".
I think that Speaker Pelosi laid out some excellent groundwork yesterday with her speech about how members of Congress should have options. Trying desperately to remain in Congress, at the cost of doing what's right, brings up a LOT of questions that the repukes should be forced to answer. On paper, many of these repuke members of Congress have the ability to make much more money in the private sector. So, what are they hiding?
As far as trump goes, I hope that IF he displays any aspirations to run again, or even just to be a big influence in the party, we need to keep hammering away about how he has proved he's NOT supportive of law enforcement. We should also hammer away about how loyal his MAGAts were to him, only to have him throw them under the bus.
Honestly, though, I think that by the time Leticia James and Fani Willis get done with trump. the destruction of all things trump will be complete. Wishful thinking on my part? Maybe. Time will tell.

Our D leaders have to play the cards right now.
