(18,998 posts)Dumb shit that people that interpret the bible say it says.
I just clicked on it and it showed something from Duteronimy...and apparently most people don't know that those are the laws laid down on the nation of Israel more than 3000 years ago...there is no divine mandate anywhere in the bible to have such laws.
And if you apply Christianity to it, Jesus himself spoke out against such laws.
But I can show some dumb laws from less than 200 years ago in our own country...does that mean the constitution is bogus?
I don't want to fight over this so just take what I said for what it is worth...there is plenty to criticize about religion without being stupid about it.

(18,998 posts)It is a collection of books...some historical in nature and some not...some are philosophical and some are just a book of laws and some are just a list of ancestor.
It is the Christian fundamentalist that created the dichotomy, and the atheist that like it that way because it makes it so easy to shoot down...far easier than debating the actual philosophical points made in some places..

(12,327 posts)and the name of the site is Dumb stuff the bible says.
I think that's the only criteria for sourcing the quotes.
And blah blah blah Israel handing down law blah blah blah. That may be what some believe, but fundamentalist christians say that the whole shebang is the inerrant Word of God(TM). It's fun to point out the absurdity of the bible since they say they take it so literally.
So they should pluck out their eyes, put their babies near snake pits and nosh on some dung, because it's all in the book.

(18,998 posts)Is a valid and important criticism of it.
But the created the game with this claim...and you will play it with them.
A game by the way both sides get to score points on...so that makes it work, and makes it a us against them thing that works for them better than it does for you.

(18,219 posts)You should cross post this to Atheists and Agnostics group. I am sure everyone there will enjoy it.
My favorite has always been the fig tree story, since it is New Testament and hard to argue with, and it shows that Jesus wasn't all that special---why didn't he just make the tree bear fruit just for him instead of killing it. Wouldn't that have been a better miracle than acting like a petulant child?

Unicorns and gummy bears. The next time a bible banger starts quoting it I may end up on the floor.

(5,276 posts)People are entitled to believe what they want, delusional or not, as long as they don't force others to accept their beliefs. That includes nut balls like the couple back in the news who were arrested for not treating their child's life threatening illness, figuring prayer would work - of course it did not and the girl died unnecessarily. In my view they got off light, I'd throw them in jail and toss the key.
