2014 won't be pretty because the contrast between reality and hope/change is impossible to ignore and no third-party has risen to challenge the con-game.
Some people expected 2nd term would be "better" than the 1st. I expected 2nd term would be "worse" and I'm correct so far. The Dems have now "triangulated" themselves so keenly close off the obscenely artificial "tea-party" that the Dems own the entire Republican territory, where the "middle" is anything neither "tea-party" nor "Democratic/Liberal/Progressive". That, baby, is how you and I were shunted aside.
In fact it's on reading DU that I learned about a current channel of thought that *identified* the 'tea-party' with 'progressive democratic liberal' as being *the same* kind of "extremist". "Oh yes!" these wonderkinds say "The extremes meet and are identical", giving no more thought to the slogan.

(45,851 posts)The lurker/poster ratio is usually fairly high in most online forums, it's not posters reccing each other's posts that get big numbers of recs, to a surprising extent it's lurkers reccing.
MineralMan
(151,263 posts)lists of DURecs is always interesting. A lot depends on the nature of the thread, of course. Some threads get recced by people posting in the thread, primarily. Other threads have lists of those who recommended full of names I don't or barely recognize. Every once in a while, I click to see who is recommending a thread. Not often, because I've done it before, with similar results.
I'm not sure what it all means, really. I like the transparency on DU3, just because it allows people to have a look at such things, if they're interested.

(9,688 posts)Aside to laugh at, of course.
I'm a bit worried about that.
I'd like Snowden to be tried in the International Criminal Court according as our 21st century consensus on what are universal laws. To be sure the US is not signatory to the ICC. Nevertheless, what Snowden's leaks appear to prove is that there exist both national and international criminal breaches of "privacy", as commonly defined by national and universal standards.

(9,688 posts)You don't think Snowden's whistle-blowing is a "real issue".
The "real issue" to you is:
"I'm against private contractors being involved with my data, but I'm not going to be able to stop it being abused"
So you are a person who acclimatizes with slights (like "private contractors being involved with my data"
because you concede that "I'm not going to be able to stop it being abused". This is not a high endorsement of your "spirit". It is especially damning when you compare that spirit with that of Edward Snowden.

(100,133 posts)He's the story because he has made himself so, and so have his fans.
The so-called authoritarians have been pointing out that what has been going on did not start on January 20, 2009, and WE KNEW about it during the BUSH administration. JUST BECAUSE THOSE ARE THE FACTS DOES NOT MEAN THAT WE LIKE IT OR THAT WE DO NOT CARE.
What I'd like to know is WHERE were all the people now pissing their pants over the destruction of the 4th Amendment DURING THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION?
Thank you kindly, and bless your heart.

(2,088 posts)I worked to get my Congressman and Senators to vote against the Patriot Act. My Senators are Republicans and voted for it. My Congressman is a Democrat and voted against.
I worked to get people on the ballot that would overturn the Patriot Act. I campaigned for people committed to ending that horror.
I put myself on the line at work and in university. I get called an America hater, a terrorist supporter. I had the police called on me by College Republicans saying I was inciting riots for working against the Bush Administration when I was an undergraduate at the University of Arizona and Graduate student at Northern Arizona University.
I got threatened with my job by my principal for my Obama and Dean bumper stickers. I got nasty phone calls from parents telling me I was not fit to be a teacher because I didn't support the government. I refused to take the loyalty oath Arizona forces all teachers to take before employment with the ACLU on my side.
Unlike the liberals that Phil Ochs sings about, I did and do my part every God damn day of my fucking life. What the hell do you do?
I live overseas now and get the brunt of this shit from the locals in China, as they think I support everything my government does IN MY NAME. I DO NOT SUPPORT THE DESTRUCTION OF THE CONSTITUTION BY ANY PRESIDENT, REPUBLICAN OR DEMOCRAT!!!
I was also working to end the practice of corporal punishment in Arizona schools. I resigned a teaching position in protest over the use against one of my students.
You really hit a nerve with me over your snarky post. You accused me of doing nothing and getting pissed when Snowden said his shit.

With any current event, once we get beyond the initial facts of what happened, the DU Shiny Object Patrol* makes reading about it on DU a task, to put it mildly.
