The Brits haven't been as gung ho militarily as we have, lately, meaning less Iraq/Vietnam crapshoots. It probably looks pretty appealing as a result. A chance to feel brave/important without actually seeing combat. Just my opinion anyway.

JROTC units in the schools. The Army JROTC currently has 281,000 cadets. The Navy JROTC has 75,000. The Air Force JROTC has 102,000 cadets. Not sure about the Marine Corps JROTC.

I was in the Marine Corps JROTC in High School, and it was a great experience.

281k+75k+102K+26k (Civil Air patrol) + others in the US = more than 484k

14k+47k+35k+45k in the UK = 141k

I went to a UK school which had a Combined Cadet Force section (army and air force). It's worth pointing out that learning to fly is a lot cheaper in the USA than the UK; many of those in the air force section were doing it hoping to get the subsidised (or free?) flying lessons it could lead to. So it's better to compare the overall numbers rather than just the air force ones, I think.
