(9,688 posts)Why do you "put it out there" like that?
I'm the opposite of a "rebellious republican".
Nothing, not even a smidgen of a thing, attracts me to the US Republican Party, so I can't imagine what it would be to be a "rebellious" one.
There is something quite sick about the US Republican Party, whether its members call them "rebellious" or not.
Pretzel_Warrior
(8,361 posts)But there are a lot of reasons for that. The first 8 years of it's existence, DU was a tremendous well spring of ideas from the opposition. For the past 4.5 years, DU has had to figure out how to be the same collection of concerned centrist Democrats and progressive activists dealing with being the party in the White House. And I think the trolls have increased and become more sophisticated.
Whatever the case, I think the team or group or coalition is slowly figuring out how to operate in that reality.
This is still a GREAT site with wealth of information and vital diversity of ideas and points of view. That's what makes the Democratic Party so strong.

I have been lurking for about month or so and I quickly picked up on it here so if I can others are seeing it too.
What is the Democratic Party becoming now? A Party that believes in supporting individuals or a Party that supports corporatism as it has rapidly become in the last few years?
If the party decides to continue down the corporatist path they will lose me and I am sure millions of others who do not believe in corporatism either.

(2,949 posts)Do come here for advice which i have always found to be excellent. so thank you for answering my questions. A board like this is supposed to have different views otherwise why have the board at all ? The trolls are easy to spot and actually should just be ignored for best results.
Still like the board and can handle just about anything posted here agree or disagree. Some here are total Obama loyalists and are offended if one says something anti-Obama. Some feel they were let down by Obama and express their feelings here. Both will have good and bad points. It is up to us to glean the value from each post and use it for what we feel will help us in our efforts.
Getting sleepy now and will stop now.

(6,151 posts)Skinner, much of this website is being overrun with thinly disguised Rethugs and their minions. If they're allowed to continue the present level of vitriol and personal attacks like mad dog bullies, it will eventually ruin the place. Unopposed flamers are only out to destroy, not build, and don't really deserve a place at the table - especially one supposedly (??) dedicated to the Democratic Party. They act like American Taliban. If I wanted to wade through so much mental porn, I'd go listen to Pig Boy.

(102,361 posts)felt unwelcome when posting for the most part after a couple weeks. I read more than speak up, I'm kind of a recluse and not sure how to handle an international (sometimes) conversation.
That being said, I first encountered this site in the very early 1990s and didn't even know you were all here until this past year... but I like all the variety of topics, when the rest of the world seems fully consumed by the GeoZimmermanShow or whatever... and I like that I can find out what's happening almost anywhere much faster than most other sources I know of. That's what I like most about DU and what prompted me to join... haven't logged in much lately because I would rather not join in much of the recent conversations or be tempted to.
This place is kind of cool overall though so I guess I'll stick around... as long as i don't become a subject of the Hate Mailbag! And I liked the Hate Mailbag!
I hope a more pleasant general tone prevails.

(5,029 posts)I came to this site as a registered republican and was welcomed. Yes there were some flames by trolls, For the most part I was made to feel welcome by many. Those I will never forget, they schooled me in the ways of DU etiquette. I am forever grateful for those people.
Today it seems that there is much more going on here because of the fact that DU has become a force to be reckoned with. DU is now quoted on national media. The days here are different from when I came here, do not despair and realize that despite attacks that you perceive, you have found a home. The best advice is that I would suggest that you develop a thick skin, because you are new here.
You are going to be attacked to try and drive you away from this site, simply put the trolls know that you are going to be easily discouraged.
Just trust me, there are many people here that are of like mind. I have been tested by both on the right and the left. I have never been tomb stoned on this site. I speak openly and honestly, I refuse to get into flame wars. I promote freethinking and accept any criticism. I mull it over and try to decide if it provocation or just a pro from the opposition.
This is a very intellectual site, with multitudes of freethinkers. Just keep lurking and watch and see what you think. DU is under attack, admin is still trying to figure it out. Believe me, I am probably on the top of the watch list despite my longevity and upbeat posts. Go figure with a handle like Rebellious Republican.
I will not be driven away and will continue to post regardless of the flames that come my way! Welcome to our world 2naSalit

(9,688 posts)The biggest problem I have contributing to DU is finding the correct line between disruptor/critic.
That is sometimes difficult, as I told a "DU host" who banned me from his group after 1, that is *one* fairly innocuous post. Or perhaps it was 2 - no more.
When I don't see open criticism I see a field of turnips.
"Under Colonel Korn's rule, the only people permitted to ask questions were those who never did. Soon the only people attending were those who never asked questions, and the sessions were discontinued altogether, since Clevinger, the corporal and Colonel Korn agreed that it was neither possible nor necessary to educate people who never questioned anything."
That was yesterday. Perhaps some contributors/mods/hosts of DU are batting down the hatches causing *them* difficulty understanding the distinction disruptor/critic?
In any event I'm attracted to DU just because it hosts both informal and/or critical discussions between some of the very best. I'm glued to many DU discussions just because this first year of Obama's 2nd term is so important to understand. To be fair I should "spread the responsibility" to all the proper actors, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and the senate/congressional dems equally.

(5,297 posts)fell apart over the Obama/Hillary primaries.
It didn't fall apart immediately, but slowly and very painfully over a long period of time.
I wasn't a part of the goings-on, but found the antagonisms a distraction and silly.
Eventually there were no new postings for over a week, and then a month.
Right now, I can't even remember the name of the site.
I'm fairly new, compared to the multi-year members, but I'll stay for the info and discussions as long as there's enough new material to keep it interesting.
Hope that's a long, long time.

(6,151 posts)that pissing matches promote the intellect? I thought it was more a sign of immature territory marking.
(heehee) It looks like you and I might be warming up for one. However, I have this fine super soaker water rifle that only shoots 20'. I use it to chase off free range dogs that run my fence line and stir up my own 2 barkers. Don't think it's possible to hook it up to the internet though. And it only shoots H20. So maybe I'd better quit while I can still imagine I'm ahead. Why all of a sudden I'm not mad at you anymore for the moment at least mystifies me. Maybe it's the delightful memory of chastising a loose pit bull last night with nothing more than a water gun.
Where did my aggravation go? Did you take it?

(12,081 posts)They are going to censor us pretty heavily once the election season starts next year. I will not stop posting here but I will probably explore other websites that I can truly express my opinion on. Besides it may be easier to organize and help local candadites on other websites anyway. But if DU thinks they are getting rid of me they are wrong. I will hold my tongue when I have to. They will not stop me from voting for whomever I believe the best liberal candadite is.

Fire Walk With Me
(38,893 posts)The main characteristic visible on DU is denial. It is a denial unbreachable by fact or lists of facts; it is a determination to hold on to a consensus reality where nothing is wrong because the alternative is far too unpleasant. Some understand that Something Is Indeed Wrong and do not have the capacity to deal with it so they hide and smile, hoping it will eventually change for the better on its own. Some forcefully reject the facts because they conflict with a need for a recognizable structure upon which to cling. There is no offering to them an alternate vision of reality or even an improved version of the democratic party. They gleefully fight anyone who dares challenge their denial and celebrate when they "win" against it.
If this in general is the best that Underground democrats have to offer, I want nothing to do with it. I am jaw-droppingly ashamed to look at too much of what I see posted here. There is little to no room for even the possibility of change in spite of continuous splashes in the face of the coldest waters of reality. I am tempted to post a list but those who already know, already know. It is useless. This ship cannot be turned; the corporate-corrupted party will, like the even more corporate-owned republican party, continue to install corporate and neocon interests as we increasingly quickly descend from a surveillance state into a police state, all care of the neocons, plutonomists, and the Bush disaster family. And the democrats-in-name-only who do their exact bidding.
It is embarrassing to hang around in a place where people are making a huge, highly visible effort to tell themselves and others that nothing is wrong, and that anyone who says "look" is branded as alex jones, a teabagger, a freeper, or libertarian. To forcefully challenge actual, verifiable facts. That this even occurs is horrible. The purposeful closing of minds is horrible and bodes great misery for the future as those working to make the future miserable at the upper political levels, continue on their merry way, effectively unchallenged.
And those who mock Chomsky while doing exactly what he warns against...!!!!
"The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum - even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives people the sense that there's free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate." ~Noam Chomsky
