(6,151 posts)I loved the Marx brothers. Very talented bunch. When we lived in NYC, we could pick up free theatre tickets at the USO on Wednesday nights, and we practically lived on Broadway. Saw 'Minnie's Boys' about their early years about 10 times. The US Army Pictorial Center in Manhattan was where 'Duck Soup' was made, if I recall correctly.

(15,392 posts)I think from my watching and reading various histories of them, all five of them started out together as a singing group, but that gave way to comedy very quickly. Chico actually did several different accents in order to be able to pass through various ethnic neighborhoods without getting beat up as an outsider when he went for his piano lessons. When he first started getting piano gigs as a teenager, sometimes he would double-book himself, and he would send Harpo (they looked very much alike) to one of the jobs so he wouldn't miss out on the pay, but Harpo only knew two or three songs and would get thrown out once he started repeating them. Harpo, himself, was a very good musician of course since he was self-taught on the harp, which is why he played it from the wrong side.

(I have to admit I don't know what the "correct" side is.)
They were all so talented.
