aside from the demeaning message it sends to African Americans, an acquittal will basically say: If you want to start some shit with someone, just carry a gun. If you start losing the fight you started, just shoot your victim and its all good.

Horrible, horrible public policy that.

I didn't watch it, either.. just hoping that Trayvon would get Justice.

I too was away for a bit and when I came back the verdict was out and my heart was broken like everyone's who only wanted what was fair for Trayvon.

The NAACP is outraged and brokenhearted as are many many people who needed only wanted justice for him.

Joshua DuBois ✔ @joshuadubois

Millions of mothers will fall asleep crying; fathers & sons who see themselves in the face of Trayvon are wondering where justice is.

Nerdy Wonka @NerdyWonka

The jury in Florida just announced to the world that in America, it is perfectly okay by them to kill innocent young black men.

I couldn't believe it - but at the same time, I wasn't a bit surprised.

Trayvon didn't have a chance, OR get justice. And I fear, exceedingly, that there will be more victims like him because of this. Zimmerman's beating the rap will only give the green light to other paranoiacs who wish to be self-anointed vigilante judge/jury/executioner types. Now this murder has been justified.

Horrible.

A grim day. A very grim day.

"Green light" for anyone who wants to corner a black youth and provoke him to an altercation - knowing full well you've got the trump card in your pocket. You maybe get roughed up a bit - the kid gets a hole through him - but YOU aren't to blame.

I see more black kids packin'. And the NRA's "vision" starts to gel!

at this point. I don't agree but doesn't matter at this point. What does matter is that the finer points of why the jury ruled the way they did (Zimmerman was NOT found innocent, only reasonable doubt as to the motives) will be L O S T on the butt-scratching teabagger who will see this as giving them free reign to kill at will.
I fear for those in the South, of any color, as your every encounter will make you doubt yourself. People will be fearful to confront anyone for fear that that person can just pull a gun and shot them and claim self defense. No, its not legal or the same thing but try explaining that to the average teabagging idiot that has less understanding of the Constitution and the law than the average 3rd grader.
The Zimmerman verdict, if you agree or disagree, has more far-reaching impact that this one young man and his family. It is a dark new age for us all.

George Zimmerman Was Not Found Innocent Tonight

With all of the disappointment in the jury's verdict, it is important to keep in mind what the jury did not find. They did not find that George Zimmerman was innocent of killing Trayvon Martin.

In our system of justice, the State cannot get a conviction unless it proves beyond a reasonable doubt that the Defendant is guilty of a crime. This means that even if the jury believes that the Defendant is probably guilty, they must find him not guilty if they have a reasonable doubt. In other words, if the jury believed that it was 75% or even 99% likely that George Zimmerman murdered Trayvon Martin, they must find George Zimmerman not guilty as long as they have a reasonable doubt that he might not be guilty.

As much as we don't like the result in this particular case, we should keep in mind that the legal principle articulated by English jurist William Blackstone is important. He stated:

"It is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer",...as expressed by the English jurist William Blackstone in his seminal work, Commentaries on the Laws of England, published in the 1760s.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/07/13/1223420/-George-Zimmerman-Was-Not-Found-Innocent-Tonight#

It was totally manslaughter to say the least.

I also saw in a NBC article that Zim bulb is suing NBC Universal for defamation of character.

http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/07/13/19441838-jury-finds-george-zimmerman-not-guilty?lite

I am hoping that something good comes out of this.
