DU is not alone in being targeted. Political sites across the internet are experiencing this. Where surveillance states grow, propaganda machines are inevitable. It is all part of authoritarianism.

(26,060 posts)back to the same bullshit as when I left. Is it really so hard for Snowden worshippers (hey, if we're going to name call, I can play also) to understand that some of us can handle two concepts at the same time - that the NSA is an out of control agency, that the Patriot Act is an abomination against our constitution AND think that Snowden is an asshole? The comment about who I'm obviously working for is nothing but a fucking joke on your part.

(26,060 posts)When Snowden and Greenwald keep their mouths shut, there is nothing to say, when they make themselves the story, they become the story, it's really that simple. Two weeks in Europe and not one person who thought this was important - the assumption is that all governments spy and such is the world we live in with the internet and social media I know it would make you happy to believe the rest of the world hates us because of the Snowden story but it's simply not true. They're worried about the economy, Egypt and Syria and don't give a shit about Snowden except for thinking it's hilarious that he's still living in the Moscow airport.

(26,060 posts)I've been gone a couple of blissfully unaware weeks and thoroughly enjoyed this being the very last story even commented on on both CNN International and BBC World (who were merely keeping track of snowden's whereabouts and his asylum status). It's just not that important to anyone else which may be why Greenwald has to say ever more increasingly stupid shit to make sure everyone is still talking about him.

Snowden isn't on their radar at all and anyone we spoke to about it assumes that all governments (not just the wicked US), spies on the internet, email, etc....Snowden is meaningless to them and greenwald even less so which was why I was very surprised to come back and see it's still such a major story on this site. (750 posts)The online community can flush out the hatred of Snowden, especially in ferreting out prime time electromagnetic space hogs such as Ed Shultz. Here those electromagnetic space hogs should jump out to all Americans. This media, the real pork in our economy, especially the big three, Fox, MSNBC, CNN, have the space and dedicate the time to tyrannize the way they want things done in America.
Yes looking at Ms. Perry and Mr. Shultz says plenty about the media being able to flip between terror and tyranny for or against America. Please understand I like both of these news journalists but totally disagree with them on this issue of Snowden.
Besides, these media are likely using the very same tools and Meta data base Snowden is actually talking about. Using Meta data through the shield of protected sources is way too cool and powerful being displayed before America everyday through commercialism. The way Ed acts shows a deep sense of guilt about something in the background, my view is the media has access to these meta files and has been using them in commercial advertising for years.
Consider this if the media did not have those tools like Meta data base, the commercials on cable should be a lot more cockeyed with a rhythm way different then it is now. It is as if the commercials are thinking exactly what you want!!!
First understand from my view where I originally liked the way Ed supported the working class. What especially is good is the once in a while philanthropy in a free medical center that is offered perhaps once a year in Orleans. Totally not enough Philanthropy, even though there is the capability for much more.
What puzzles me is why not something similar for the working class do free big tent union sign ups. Ed Shultz is so union orientated but severely conservative when it comes to really applying what he talks about for the working class. Obviously victim wage earners displayed by the red state minimum wage blockade.
And or reporting union negotiations with the same in the court time line expressed for the Zimmerman stuff by cable television. Thats a real defect deficit, the imbalance so obvious it sticks out like Eds belly.
No, Snowden is no punk, even though he broke the law. All that very, very, laughable considering those at the top swindled trillions of dollars via phony wars profiteering by those very secret tools Snowden is exposing.
Here the media brought America to where we are now, the defect of fraud in society avoided in America for more than decades. Leaving America with thousands of Americans that dedicated their lives and volunteered for these wars then endure post-traumatic stress that wind up taking their own life.
Or consider those who lose their jobs because they hate Obama too. Thousands per year, or homeless. Anyone can argue Ms. Harris and Mr. Ed Shultz are the best paid hypocrites money can buy.
One conclusion, I could like hypocrites. Yikes
yes if they do what is good for everyone not just the one percent!

(20,226 posts)I do agree that support for authoritarianism should be a TOS violation though. But I doubt that they realize that they are supporting authoritarianism. Sometimes people become so singularly focused that they develop incredible tunnel vision and end up justifying behavior the way a bomber pilot justifies the innocent lives they are destroying. 1) Arguing that Snowden broke the law is NOT hatred of Snowden
2) Arguing that releasing classified information that explicitly details how the US looks for terrorists before they attack is not good, These issues have been argued in Congress and the basic outline was known and passed by Congress. If you think it unconstitutional, form an organisation and take it to court,
3) Remember that he did not stop at speaking of the surveillance programs, He went to China and then Russia taking 4 laptops with what he said were volumes of classified information. This is an action that is incredibly reckless. Note that his mentor Greenwald speaks of the content of that being something that could hurt the US more than any release of classified information in the past.
4) JUST from what he has released has harmed Obama and his worldwide diplomatic initatives - maybe especially a just started effort to get agreement with China on intellectual property rights and hackiing.
I do not "hate" Snowden, I think he is a very arrogant, naive person, with enormous skill in ONE area - computers. He is harming the Democratic party - and aiding the RW Paul faction. I don't see how this helps the country in any way. As to the issues, every time FISA and other things have come up, the law has been modified to add restraints. Wyden and others are FAR better heroes on this issue than Snowden, who did not bother to go to Wyden -- or even Rand Paul!
This is an issue that could be addressed within the government.

(3,411 posts)So we as Americans have to accept a corrupt government that sometimes throws bones to us, but is ultimately trying to undermine America as we know it and make life more dangerous for so many of us? Are we as Americans supposed to accept a government that bullshits us and treats us like children, with doublespeak, outright lying, taking us for fools, and taking advantage of the weaknesses of human nature, and pretending to work for us while they try to pass things like the Trans Pacific Partnership? And then our government expects us to have blind loyalty as a result?
I don't think anyone here hates government, we hate it that government is not truly being a government OF, FOR, and BY the people.

(3,411 posts)I've been criticizing the deflection of attention away from the NSA Spying on Americans issue, which looks blatantly like a propaganda attempt from the establishment. NSA Spying on Americans is FAR more important than whether or not Edward Snowden is a traitor.
Even then, the accusations that I hear about Snowden being a traitor are petty, UNLESS he releases things like information on spies and other things. None of what Edward Snowden has released so far has "aided the enemy." Snowden disclosing information on spying on Europeans is not treason because the Europeans are not our enemy.
I find it somewhat concerning, somewhat amusing of the highly suspicious methods that are being used to attack Snowden. If you guys are propagandists then you really suck in making it look believeable. The hatefest mentality just doesn't fly well in DU.

The "their crime is worse than his crime so we shouldn't prosecute his crime" is a joke. His crime should be prosecuted as well as every other crime.
