Listening to Stephanie Miller this morning, I don't know whether to scream or weep.

There are some of the most virulent, horrifying, racist callers I have ever heard. It's as if the gates have opened and all the demons of hell have been loosed on earth to spit and spew hatred. I guess I'm not surprised, but it appears one of the outcomes of the not guilty verdict is that they feel safe and vindicated in their hate.

We need help. We need help badly.

the gop idiots in congress. The more they talk the more awake America becomes. And yes we do need help or we are going over the cliff with them.

I have often wondered if German citizens saw the change coming and were aware of the consequences in the 30s.

We know the audience is 99% liberal and so do the callers, so it's an insult-fest. I wonder if the screeners are selecting for outrage. I expect so. It makes it easier for Steph and crew to snark and get us to feel a sense of identification. But...damn. You just hate to know those people are out there, angry and stupid and propagating hate.

that explains the return of Road flare Mary. If I recall correctly she was put on a do not let on the air list. I've done call screening for a well known Progressive radio host, and I can tell you that sometimes these trolls get thru. The host enjoys robust debate from conservative callers but the problem is when the wicked nasty people get thru.

I am a pagan atheist Unitarian, and but, I believe the Judeo-Christian bible, as well as Shakespeare, Twain, the Koran, Abe Lincoln, etc. all have it right: the better angels of human nature reside alongside our devils. Tribalism is inherent in human beings. It accounts for xenophobia. It is a relic of our reptilian brain, that served to help keep us alive in completely different times. There is always a tug to act in our own self-interest, including cheating and other cardinal sins, that lies within our prehistoric natures and remains within evolved homo sapien.

It is our responsibility to seek out and act according to our higher principles. This is something we have to do intentionally, rather than acting on instinct. I experience this personally at times, in human interactions.

I think this is what we are seeing demonstrated today. There is no question in my mind that some people are awakened to these essential values, while others continue to operate out of instinct and reactions that date back to a time when physical survival was all.

Those people can only change themselves, we can't change them with logic or reason, for they don't respond to that. We can only figure out how to keep humanity (and our physical world, environment) moving forward with the least amount of damage from the backward-looking people, no matter what culture they are in. I fear though they will bring us down.

My atheist prayer is that every one of those people would have to, for a brief time, truly understand what it is like to walk a mile in others' shoes. Anger and fear do indeed make us tribal as we seek security, and reaching out to the other side makes us fear losing who we are. That said, change has to come or we are just doomed to fight until we destroy ourselves, and some of those people, like GZ,are more than willing to kill.

I agree wholeheartedly about angels/devils, and that we all have to face our shadows. At the moment, I'm just gobsmacked and in the middle of an emotional reaction. Breaks my heart, and steels my resolve.

Peace to us all.

At least they're being honest! I think there's little doubt listening to them that they are racist and ignorant (which is a bit redundant, I know.). But when these people squeal about how this trial wasn't about about race, we can laugh in their faces as they are the shining example of the very attitude that had Zimmerman getting out of his car with a gun to chase down a teenager.

And speaking of Steph, every time I would heard Zimmerman's statements or reenactment this song would pop into my head

"You're a lying sack of crap! You're a lying sack of crap!"

.....I had to hear screed about the "Boy-Mayor" (Castro), the "Beauty-Pageant-Senator" (Wendy Davis) and the "President-whatever-he-is" who all are about "killing babies". (It was out of the blue, and had nothing to do with the discussion. The teacher cut him off, before he could get to anything racial, but I'm sure that was next.

We are not safe from this hatred and ignorance anywhere. I left that class vowing to never go back, but I had second thoughts. Groups like that need some people with moderate, thoughtful views.

...and thus how polarized the response to this trial. The problem are the laws in Florida that made the burden of proof so high along with a DA's office that did a poor job in bringing the charges and then prosecuting it. The hype of the trial was mirrored by the coverage...those who favored Zimmerman watched faux while those who felt (justifiably) that Martin was murdered generally watched MSNBC. As the trial went along and heated up, so did the passions and the feeling their side was in the right. No surprise that there was such outrage on one side and gloating on the other of this verdict. It surely would have been reverse had Zimmerman been found guilty.

I can understand the anger many have in the verdict and I wish there was some way to punish Zimmerman for his racial profiling and playing vigilante cop. The message this verdict send will lead to more bloodshed and the NRA and its proxies push for even more lax gun laws across the country and more encounters like this occur. That's the disturbing part of this verdict...

This seems to be a recurring theme where people are comparing the two cases. And they support Zimmerman partly because O.J. got off.

It justifies their hatred.

Race. The only POSSIBLE good that can come out of this is if people of intelligence and foresight try to have a conversation, even with the Road Flare Marys and trolls of the world. They don't have to respond, but at least they can't say the effort hasn't been made.

Stephanie's show isn't for that, but I have seen some heroic efforts already, and hope they continue.

Knowing these comments were from whites makes me deeply ashamed of my race. Ashamed of America. What a f'd up society we live in.
