The only way to get the message across to those punks is to hit them in the pocketbook.
My mini boycott may not seem like much, but if others shun them, too, then it becomes a movement.
I won't be going to TX, either.
FWIW, I'm Caucasian.

(23,720 posts)those freaks just got licensed to kill anyone they don't like the looks of. These people are itching to kill, and I really don't think they'll limit themselves to targeting just one group of people for very long.

(75,480 posts)connect to airplanes there in the past, which sometimes meant an over night stay in a hotel. I was never impressed with the place, too hot and clammy for my taste. I spent some time in Texas too and have no desire to return.

(5,510 posts)But many in powerful positions there depend on those tourism dollars & taxes.
Jenoch
(7,720 posts)but a boycott because of the Zimmerman case is not any downturn, it would be a manufactured downturn out of spite that would hurt those at the bottom and not so much everyone else.

That aside, since I live in a state that is overrun with red neck idiots, I am not too drawn to vacation anywhere that has just as much problems and/or worse problems then Oklahoma.

(238 posts)Tell Disney, Universal, Sea World and the like it is not safe for families. I was going to take my grandchildren there this year, we are going to go somewhere else instead. Just think a person with a bad intention can accost you, kill you or your loved one and say they were afraid for their life and get by with murder. Hitting them in their pocketbook is one of the best ways to have change. When the money dries up then they will change.

(23,156 posts)but that has nothing to do with recent events there.
I have been there several times in the past, and it was perfectly fine. I was last there perhaps 15 years ago, and it's just never again been on my travel radar.
There are 50 states in our country. At some point I've been to all but five of them, and there are many perfectly fine states I'm not very likely to visit, just because I have no reason to go there.
It's really frustrating when posters here make blanket, negative comments about an entire state because of the actions of a few. For those of you who are currently disinclined to go to Florida, that's fine, don't go. But unless you take out full page ads in local newspapers no one is really going to know. Or miss you.
As others have pointed out, the main people who are hurt are those in the hospitality industry. However, it's entirely up to you where you want to spend your vacation dollars.

(45,319 posts)and because of the deeply bigoted laws of the state which allow legal discrimination against LGBT people.
When I was a kid we visited Florida and passed through all white towns which had next to them shanty towns where the African Americans all lived. The segregation and the stark difference in quality of the two 'towns' was an image that never left my young mind and when grown I simply had no desire to return to hot, humid, buggy bigoted Florida. Sue me. It's my life, my money and I refuse to go where I am not wanted. Should I be running to give them my custom? Why?

(44,566 posts)When were lax gun laws and racial profiling merely a Florida problem?
They're not. They're a nationwide problem, affecting all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
I live in Florida. I was truly sickened by the Zimmerman verdict. I knew Stand Your Ground was going to be a disaster the moment it passed.
Am I still a "punk"?
Mini-boycott all you like, but you are missing out on some terrific places. (And I don't mean that overpriced tourist trap south of Orlando, either.)
