(3,891 posts)Guerrilla's who fought against Batista in Cuba were terrorists, until the won. Then they were freedom fighters to the world, to others, they had been freedom fighters since day one.
The Viet-Cong were irregular forces, much like the Taliban, except they were state sponsored. North Viet-Nam supplied them, provided them with training, and advice. To those in Viet-Nam today, they helped drive the Imperialists out of the nation.
Philippines in World War II. Self Promoted General Wendel Fertig (He had been promoted as far as Lieutenant Colonel, but knew that nobody would pay attention to a Light Colonel, so he made himself a General, and appointed himself commander of all forces in the Philippines.) He led a poorly supplied rag tag band of escaped POW's, Soldiers, Sailors, and Marine's, who had escaped capture, and Civilians against the Japanese on Mindanao. The Military histories have largely ignored his singular man, but when the American Forces did arrive, the way must much easier than would have been because of the 80,000 troops under Fertig's command. Nobody knows how many Japanese Forces were tied up trying to pin down the irregular forces on Mindanao.
I could go on, and on and on. In each instance, what these people were depended more on who wrote the history, than who was telling the story. To 55% of the American People (last poll released on the subject) Snowden was a Whistleblower. Carney may be putting the White House Position on the matter before the press, but that doesn't make it the truth to the American People.
