Definitive DNA match made in Boston Strangler case

BOSTON —A definitive DNA match linking longtime Boston Strangler suspect Albert DeSalvo to the murder of Mary Sullivan has been made, Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley confirmed Friday morning.

DeSalvo's body was exhumed from a Peabody gravesite last week to determine if he murdered the 19-year-old woman in 1964.

Police saved evidence from the rape and murder of Mary Sullivan for almost half a century and matched it to DNA on a water bottle discarded in the present day by a nephew of DeSalvo.

DeSalvo admitting killing Mary Sullivan and 10 other women in the Boston area between 1962 and 1964 in a series of slayings that became known as the Boston Strangler case. But he recanted in 1973 before dying in prison, where he was serving a life sentence for other crimes.

The new testing only links DeSalvo to final victim Mary Sullivan's murder. DNA evidence was not available for testing in the previous Boston Strangler cases.
