Family rescued by Zimmerman cancels press conference

cross post from LBN

The family rescued by George Zimmerman when they were trapped in an overturned SUV canceled a scheduled news conference today and is pleading for privacy.

Zimmerman was one of two men who came to the aid of Dana and Mark Gerstle and their two children, who were trapped inside a blue Ford Explorer SUV that had rolled over after traveling off the highway in Sanford, Fla., about 5:45 p.m. Thursday, the Seminole County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

The Gerstles were expected to hold a press conference today at the office of Zimmerman's attorney Mark O'Mara, but cancelled a few hours before it was supposed to take place.

some lady in a small pickup truck fishtailed and the truck flipped. A bunch of us helped pull her out of the truck and the truck caught on fire shortly after we pulled her out.

I never held a press conference.

A girl in a jeep overturned on a country road. She ended up with her head under the jeep. Lucky for her it was in wet mucky dirt.

Me and a few other guys that stop lifted the jeep off her and waited for the ambulance and cops. I gave my name and info then took off.

She learned two valuable lessons that day. Wear you Damn Seatbelt and don't text and drive.

Oh, and I missed the press conference.

"The family called because they wanted to address the media. I knew that if we did it in an organized way, it would help them get back to a normal life.. But they called today and said they were more worried about blow back from saying anything that would be favorable to George, and decided they did not want to do any media," O'Mara said."

Gee, I wonder what/who prompted them to call Zimmerman's attorney to arrange the media press conference? The Seminole County Sheriff's Office would be my bet.

Just the PR attempt that MSM was falling for. But looks like Zimmy's attorney failed this time. Oh well.

and hold a news conference at the sheriff's office. They should never have scheduled anything at Zimmerman's attorny's offices. They need to feed the media machine so they can get on with their lives. This family did nothing wrong. They need to tell their side of the story and then refuse any further media attention. This is the only way to get the media out of their lives. (I'm a broadcast media PR guy so I know what I'm talking about.)

why have a press conference at all? Why do they need to tell their "side" of the story? Accidents happen every day.

The only people who gain from a press conference are Zimmy, his lawyer and the Sanford police...in short they are being used for others' purposes. Walk away.

Wed Jul 24, 2013, 03:17 PM

the media will follow them and hound them. If they give the media a simple story about how they had an accident and two men stopped to help, and those two men happened to be Zimmerman and his body guard and how after the LEO showed up, Zimmerman and friend left and that's all the contact they had with them, then the press will report that and most of them will then leave the family alone. Then there is nothing more to the story. If they give nothing to the media about the accident and Zimmerman, some of the media will keep after them until another story comes up to get the attention of the media. It might not be pretty, but that's how it works.

But if they give the media nothing, the media continues to try to get something. That is the part that is worse than having a media conference. These people do not wish to be at the center of the Zimmerman controversy. If they do nothing, they will not extricate themselves from the spot they find themselves in. What is your experience in these matters?

I'll give you an example. If someone wins a small, yet still significant lottery jackpot, say $12 million. The best thing to do is to participate in the lottery news conference. Tell their story, what they might do with the money, how they found out they had the winning numbers, reaction from family members, innocuous stuff like that. Then the media get enough to do a story and they move on. The public's curiosity is appeased and it's over for the most part. If they do not do the news conference, the media outlets will attempt to contact them individually to get the video, audio, and quotes. There is no malice, they just want the story. This thing in Florida is a much bigger story, but it would be helpful to the family to get this sort of advice to get the media their story and move on.
