Gunman Arrested on Way to Tie Nancy Grace to a Tree Naked, Slit Her Throat

A western New York man who tweeted his plans to murder controversial TV personality Nancy Grace was apparently in the process of taking his threats to the next level when he was arrested last week on his way out of town.

David Lee Simpson, 48, had apparently taken issue with comments Grace made during the trial of Jodi Arias. The Bath resident had become "infatuated" with Arias, and tweeted that he wanted to strap Grace and her colleague Jane Velez-Mitchell to a tree naked and then "slit their throats."

Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona's Maricopa County became aware of Simpson's tweets in June and sent a deputy to New York to track him down. After word reached Arpaio that Simpson quit his job at an auto-repair shop and was allegedly on his way "south" to exact his vengeance on Grace and Velez-Mitchell, the sheriff asked local authorities to monitor the situation.

Simpson was subsequently pulled over by a Bath Police Department investigator, and a search of his car turned up at least two guns and a knife as well as "ammunition, handcuffs, zip-ties, binoculars, a knife and a police radio."

Arpaio involved himself in a New York case?

Is his jurisdiction so squeaky clean that he can expend his resources this way?

And do the Maricopa County taxpayers have anything to say about this?

but isn't that psychopath in his jail? They may have people monitoring social media for her name.

And he didn't "involve himself" - he notified local authorities.

Good Lord - did I just stand up for Arpaio? This place sometimes...

16. It sounds as though the intended victims were in AZ at the time, so AZ authorities

would be the first to get involved, I'd expect. But the whole piece is written in a fawning "Yay, Arpaio" sort of way, which is a bit jarring.

Kind of interesting how computer crimes transcend space: if he issued the threats while in NY, it seems like the crimes occurred there, but the victims where in AZ. Seems like he could have been charged in either place...

And I think that Grace needs some serious psychiatric care...but this guy was just off the reservation. Glad he was caught before he could follow through with his threat.

10. How in the hell did a Sheriff in AZ ID a man in NY by his Tweet? Is Arpaio running the NSA?

That's a scarier thought than tying a naked Nancy Grace to a tree.

Sure sounds like a job for Sheriff McCloud.
