A congressional hearing next Wednesday on the National Security Agency's surveillance efforts will include testimony from critics, including the journalist who first reported on the programs.
Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) told The Guardian that he's working with other lawmakers to spearhead the hearing in order to rebut "constant misleading information" from the intelligence community. It will not be a formal hearing, but will feature rougly a dozen lawmakers from both parties.
Grayson said that The Guardian's Glenn Greenwald, who reported on the surveillance programs based on information provided by NSA leaker Edward Snowden, has been invited to participate in the hearing via video conference from his home in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Greenwald indicated over Twitter on Friday that he will participate.

(772 posts)but yes, have you seen Congress' approval rating lately?
Americans are sick of this kind of bickering.
Phony hearings for phony scandals are nothing but a waste of time and money; a disruption no better than the GOP's witch hunts.

(115,400 posts)..he allegedly has.
I doubt that there will be any cameras there anyway so he should come clean with the information that Snowden has in his possession or in Russia's possession, whatever the case may be.
Since Congress can't seem to get the information from the NSA, maybe Greenwald will give it to them?

(62,325 posts)surveillance. And the EU I believe views in its charter, privacy as a human right.
There was talk this week of convening an International Conference to revise the old laws on the issue of privacy. Something like the Geneva Conventions. Apparently the old laws haven't kept up with the technology and now there are suggestions that it is time to bring them up to date.
I had a feeling this is what would happen as a result of all these revelations. And I hope it happens quickly.
Catherina
(35,568 posts)The need to put some action behind their talk. I don't trust Germany's security apparatus to follow any laws unless Merkel's opponents throw her out on the streets and stick to their word.
We wouldn't respect any new Geneva Convention but I hope it happens quickly too and that people power here can bring about many, many changes we need.

But, just talking to someone over the internet is not going to cut it.
I've been involved with many video conference calls for many, many years, and it is not the same thing as being there in person.
So, this is just more crapola coming from Greenwald.

(126,102 posts)GREENWALD: I've always said that this isn't about Snowden. And I've been constantly attacked for saying it. But I think it's important for me to keep saying it: this isn't about Snowden, and I'll keep saying it isn't about Snowden, no matter how much I am attacked. I've been pointing out these issues since long before Snowden approached me for my help in getting the story out -- in fact, I started pointing out that Obama is even worse than Bush on civil liberties even before Obama took office -- and, of course, I've been attacked for it, just as Snowden is now under attack. But this isn't about Snowden, no matter how hard my critics try to reframe the narrative. Snowden handed me a bunch of eye-popping documents, and right now I am planning another eye-popping story based on what I have. It's a story Obama doesn't want me to tell, and I will certainly live in fear of being tortured or executed if I tell it, just as Assange and Manning and Snowden all live in fear of being tortured or executed, although, of course, this isn't about Snowden
GRAYSON: Thank you.
GREENWALD: Let me add that this isn't about Snowden.
