President Obama is done caring about what congressional Republicans think. The president is meeting with Democrats in order to implement his agenda without them.
And hes used the executive authority tactic before, including last summers controversial move to cut deportations for younger illegal immigrants and the mental health focus he announced as part of his gun control agenda after the Newtown massacre.
But administration officials and advisers say whats ahead will be more extensive and frequent than previous efforts, and the White House is on the hunt for anything that can move without congressional approval, including encouraging efforts like Attorney General Eric Holders lawsuits to find new avenues of enforcement in the wake of the Supreme Courts decision on the Voting Rights Act last month.

In short, the president is telling Republicans to take their obstruction, shove it where the sun doesnt shine. Nothing enrages obstructionist congressional Republicans more than Obama working around them. The power to obstruct is only power that Republicans have left. John Boehners office has already been howling about a presidential power grab on every issue, but this is nothing different from what the Speaker has been saying for more than two years.
Republicans have no one but themselves to blame for their current plight. They could have had a grand bargain on the taxes, the debt, and deficit. They could have worked with the president to modify Obamacare. They could have had a hand in immigration, but each time that the president offered cooperation and compromise, they said no. Republicans have said no so often that President Obamas only choice is to implement as much of his agenda as possible through executive action.

(23,097 posts)Just yesterday I saw a report that the administration was once again negotiating with Republicans on a "grand bargain" that would decrease corporate tax rates (how do you get less than 0%?) in return for infrastructure spending (that will never be approved).
As you said - in the meantime - enjoy the show

We are always told that he can't get anything done because of Republican Obstructionism. Well, he can get cooperation from Republicans on ridding this country, as he promised, of these abusive Bush policies by supporting the next bill coming up to reign in the NSA and the rest of our 'security' apparatus.
The last bill lost by a very narrow margin and it had bi-partisan support. All that is needed now, with this new found commitment to ignore Republicans when they try to obstruct his policies, is to start putting it into effect by encouraging his own Party to vote for the elimination of the spying on Americans programs.

(17,175 posts)It leads to an article about how the poor babies in Congress are struggling to make ends meet on only $174k/year, so they're not willing to give up even 5% of their salary.
As far as the President giving Congress the Fickle Finger of Fate, good for him -- if he'll follow through with it. I know he can only do so much with Executive Orders (and the next president can reverse them, anyway), but I really hope they've been slipping spinach into the White House soup, and he can't stands no more...

(13,058 posts)During Wednesdays meeting, one Democratic lawmaker, who requested anonymity, said the president became agitated and rose to Summers defense in response to Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-Colo.) walking up to the microphone and simply saying, "Larry Summers. Bad Choice."
Summers is the wrong choice for Fed Chairman. If he nominates Summers he will ahve sided with Wall Stret against the best interests of the American people.

(37,726 posts)I trusted Mr. Obama in 2008. Then in 2012 I thought that in his second term he'd play hardball with the GOP. So far I haven't see that much change. Right down to the spying on Americans! No New Deal, just more of the same old shit. More trade deals in the works that will "fast track" even less American jobs. So, I'll believe what I see Mr. President.

(8,377 posts)He should have been doing this from day 1. The POTUS has an enormous amount of power. I can't believe how many people there are on this site who don't understand that. Basically the President doesn't really have to do anything the law says. Most Presidents make at least some effort to show some courtesy to Congress and their laws, but Congress doesn't really have control over anything.
I mean, look at the law that says we can't fund any country that has a military coup. No problem, the President simply refuses to notice that a military coup happened in Egypt.
This is how you get Congress to come to the table. You let them know you are prepared to completely disregard them and ignore their wishes entirely -- and the only way they can get a better deal is to come to the table hat in hand.
This is how it is done. This is how it is always done by Presidents that understand to power of the Presidency.
Yes, there are a few things that Congress can actually do. They can set the tax rates -- the President cannot do that unilaterally. But the president can order extremely aggressive IRS enforcement on parts of the code that the GOP doesn't like -- and use that as a bargaining chip.
Really, the only check on these things is impeachment. And quite frankly, the Democratic Party would be in a FAR, FAR stronger position if the GOP seriously tried impeachment. The public hates that crap. We saw that Wisconsin came to Walker's defense when they felt the idea of a recall was unfair. The public would overwhelmingly support Obama AND DEMOCRATS IN GENERAL if the GOP tries another go at impeachment.
In fact, that should be Obama's goal. Provoke the GOP into doing something really stupid.

(12,461 posts)He is not giving up. Obama will not be a mediocre President. He is going town to town, laying it all out. Pushing the Republicans up against that brick wall, like in Animal house.
When can the Republicans say Yes to anything Obama? How many people are they willing to hurt just to get at Obama? Is this like locking the doors when you see Obama Coming?

(57,936 posts)What if the Republican does all kinds of things using the executive privilege?
This is not the idea of constitutional government and the balance of powers.
Prosecuting voting rights under constitutional protections -- maybe, but this has to be done very carefully.
It's us to us, active Democrats, to put more Democrats into the House. Door to door, supermarket to supermarket, sidewalk to sidewalk, computer to computer.
Obama should focus on getting the NSA and the banks under control, and we should be out there working to get Democrats elected.
Kind of hard to persuade people to vote when they see what a bank like Bank of America is doing to them.
They are charging people fees to keep their money in small savings accounts. Obama should be doing more about bank regulation and encouraging people to save rather than gathering metadata via the NSA.

(7,403 posts)For instance, I think Obama would have approved the Keystone XL pipeline had Republicans budged in some other areas but right now I think Keystone XL is dead on arrival. Why else would Obama have singled out for scorn the "45 permanent jobs" that Keystone would create. Of course, all of the recent spill problems up in Canada provide some backside cover as well where the most recent one is problematic. They used steam under pressure to crack the rocks and release the oil and now oil is seeping to the surface from those cracks and after 10 weeks they still don't know how to stop it because they don't know how to relieve the pressure driving the oil to the surface. The "good" news is using steam under pressure cracked the rocks to release the oil worked as planned and the bad news is using steam under pressure cracked the rocks to release the oil worked as planned. Nobody can reasonably say that this was not a known risk and the Canadian government shares the blame for not having better oversight on the risk assessment of this project.

(36,392 posts)someone calls himself a dem? They flocked to the polls in 2008 because Obama promised change. They stayed home in 2010 because the 2008 campaign was a bunch of bullshit. Obama and 90% of the dc dems are whores for the same criminals who service the republicans.
