Boardwalk crash: Driver was 'moving purposefully,' witnesses say

A driver who witnesses described as "moving purposefully" struck a dozen people on the Venice boardwalk early Saturday evening.

Two of the pedestrians were injured critically, two were categorized as having "serious" injuries and eight others suffered minor injuries, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 6 p.m. at the boardwalk's intersection with Dudley Avenue. "The vehicle appeared to be moving purposefully down the boardwalk according to witnesses," said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Humphrey said witnesses described a dark-colored sedan striking the crowd.

"A car plowed through the boardwalk," said a stunned Daniel Regidor, who had been out for a run and was a short distance away when the crash occurred.

He described "people screaming, running."

"I was half a mile from the scene, but you could see just this mass of people trying to get out of the way ... just a lot of people screaming," Regidor said in a telephone interview. "It was horrible.

"I saw somebody flying up in the air.... When I came upon the scene, there were a bunch of people on the ground, bloodied," he said. "Some looked pretty mangled, head injuries, just a lot of blood."

that must have been horrible. I can understand how something like this would cause someone to go through a tough time. I hope I didn't cause you trouble with this.

He just couldnt snap out of it. We were already on the outs but this put was at least a hammer blow to the nail of our marital coffin. We were divorced 2 years later.

it sounds like he was suffering from PTSD. Did he ever try and get counseling for it? I know it helped me after returning from Iraq to have someone to talk to. That is a rough thing to have to go through.

The woman he saw was one of the first to be killed and he ran to get the police, who did nothing initially (they looked at him like he was a lunatic and I'm sure he was given what was going on around him).

Thank you for your service to your country. I'm sorry you suffered so much. If I could reach through this screen and hug you I would.

Although its sometimes not so deserving in return, especially in light of the way the government treats vets. I could never be that brave on purpose. I'm the first one to come to the aid of a hurt passerby, but only because it's instinct and an "in the moment" reaction, so any help I've ever rendered to anyone was purely cooincidental. You, sir, are bravery personified.
