couple's attempt to have girl results in 12 boys over 22 years

'We thought maybe, maybe, you know, we're going to have a girl. Number 12 could be the one,' she said.

Nonetheless, the couple are excited about the latest addition to the Schwandt family.

'We are confident that he is going to fit right in,' said Mr Schwandt before admitting, 'we gave up a long time ago on a little girl showing up in this family.'

But, there are children in foster care waiting for homes. Adopting from foster care is normally less expensive than going through 12 pregnancies.

in which type of sperm survives, also the timing--closer to ovulation favors Y sperm. High sodium /low dairy diets favor Y sperm (supposedly). Oh well.

It's not as easy as people think. It can be as expensive as, say, using IVF with an egg donor. It can definitely take longer. And there are no guarantees. The world is overpopulated, but that doesn't translate into lots of children to adopt. Demand far exceeds supply. Even foster-to-adopt is not that easy to come by. And lots of people wouldn't want to go through losing a child they've had for years because the bio parents suddenly got their lives together. I think it's easy to say that people reject adoption because of vanity about the superiority of their own genes but I think most people shy away from adoption because of expense and waiting periods and fears about bio parents changing their minds. Although if people did prefer to parent a child with whom they had a genetic connection, I don't think that's worthy of contempt anyway.

That said, this article is meant to get people clucking their tongues. It's why the Daily Fail exists. If the couple gave up on having a girl long ago, then how could they have been repeatedly "trying" for girls and ending up with boys? I think they had 12 kids because they wanted 12 kids, and they would have loved to have a girl in there somewhere but that doesn't mean the kept having more and more kids ONLY in order to get a girl.
