Earlier today, DiMaggios car was positively identified in the rugged Frank Church wilderness area near the River of No Return in Idaho. During a live feed from KTFB in Idaho, Acting Public Information Officer Andrea Reardon of the Valley County Sheriffs Department confirmed that horseback riders came across a man and a woman near Moorhead Lake about six miles from where the car was later found. The pair matched the descriptions of DiMaggio and Hannah Anderson.
There was nothing immediately alarming about the encounter, but a witness noted they had both hiking and camping gear. What the witness noticed was something odd about the interaction.

(154,021 posts)According to Reardon in an update this morning, "detectives from San Diego are to aproach the vehicle and process it for evidence." Depending on what they find what they do regarding evidence. She also said that Explosive technicians went through the vehicle last night and found it explosives free.
As of now they have 150 people on the ground, but they expect to have 200 personnel by the end of the day. "They are coming from all over the country."
This is a large wilderness area, with trail heads leading into it, "where a traditional grid search pattern is not useful." She added, "cellphone coverage is not something have there.." And they have had no further reports of sightings.
"Ultimately the main goal is to bring Hanna (Anderson) home safely."

(154,021 posts)That the search of the car Reardon said that they have evidence collection crews, hoping to lead search crews into "the next best place to begin searching."
As to the size of the search area Reardon added that "this is a 300 square mile area." She added some more granular detail, it is rugged, with a lot of cover, both trees and brush, with steep cliffs in places. It is not accessible to any vehicles. This tough terrain "adds to the challenge of the search."
As to the witness who came across the man and woman in the wilderness, she repeated that while the encounter "was odd" Reardon would not speculate as to what threats might have been made to Hanna by DeMaggio. But now the Aida Sherriffs Office can confirm that it was indeed Anderson and DiMaggio.

(53,339 posts)Elsewhere, the ECM headline stye does not have to be followed. I don't think they send out the ECM cops if their headline style is violated at DU.
iirc, there is or was one news aggregator that converted headlines from all sources to all caps. Members here generally converted back to uc/lc when posting stories from that aggregator here. It makes a difference in readability, especially when multiple headlines appear together on the LBN or GD page.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)I do nothing to the article.
Yes, I agree it is an archaic style sheet, but when I post my articles...I do not use that.
If people can't understand it, at this point, after explaining it multiple times...it is quite frankly other's people's problem.
pinboy3niner
(53,339 posts)...as a writer for ECM, you obviously are obligated to follow their style sheet when you submit copy to ECM.
For excerpts of ECM articles here, no one--including you--is obligated to conform to ECM's headline style.
I'd suggest that for readability and as a matter of courtesy to other members here, all caps headlines from other sources generally should be converted to uc/lc by the poster for DU.
Please consider doing that. DU does not have a stylesheet specifying all caps.

(53,339 posts)But you can (and should, imo) change all-caps headlines.
We should be faithful to the the original story text when excerpting here, but all-cap headlines should be converted to uc/lc.
We are not bound by the source's headline style rule here, and it's perfectly permissible to change an all-cap headline for readability. What it boils down to is simply a matter of courtesy to the members here.

(102,518 posts)Thanks for posting these updates. I have family in the East County area and I live a few hours' drive from the Frank Church Wilderness. It is indeed large and rugged territory, any number of bad things can happen in such a place especially for those unfamiliar with it. And even for those who are familiar with this area, it is a pretty challenging place to negotiate. I have been there several times and I make plans way ahead of time before venturing out in the wilderness. Sounds like this guy was planning for some time and may have been there before.
I didn't sleep well last night and kept waking up thinking about this... it occurred to me that he may be engaging in a death march of sorts. Seriously, this guy has nothing left to lose at this point so whatever he does from this point on will probably end n his demise, so what (I'm speculating his thought process here) if the girl doesn't survive as long as he gets his thrill for a short term? It would appear that he doesn't have a long term plan if he has gone this far in destroying everything behind them and then heads into a high elevation, northern latitude wilderness in late summer. Sure there are ancient mining claims with possible decaying structures and maybe a few caves to hide in... they are probably inhabited by wildlife... so I can imagine that he has no plan for either of them to last very long. There are health issues that hit quickly like hypothermia and elevation sickness (see that up in my area with tourists from sea level).
Hope they get her out of there safely.
And thanks, again for keeping us informed. (I am seeing news of this originating from Missoula, MT today.)

(102,518 posts)It's really rocky ground, batholith in fact, only underground place he's likely to have to go to would be an old mine shaft (if there are any as much of the mining up there would likely have been surface and river bed type). Most of those kind of "developed" places are mapped. Since they were spotted near a lake it is likely they will be near that or a river and won;t be covering too much ground on a daily basis due to the terrain.
So I can't help but think that such a sick mindset could be having a plan that only goes so far. I don't think they will last long out there. Making it through the fall and winter there is really tough.
Batholith/bathylith:Basically a very large mass of basalt-like material with no detectable floor (bottom). Or a literal sea of lithified magma that extends above and below the surface. It's hard, very dense and sharp. Think Hell's Canyon... this place is a precursor for that. Much of the vegetation is growing out of dirt deposited by wind over thousands of years or more.

(154,021 posts)DIMAGGIOS CAR FOUND IN IDAHO
By
Nadin Abbott
August 9, 2013 (San Diego) According to Sheriff Bill Gore the car belonging to James Lee DiMaggio was found in the Cascade area, about seventy miles north east of Boise Idaho.
On Wednesday, a group of Horseback riders came across a man and a woman in a wilderness area, just outside of Cascade Idaho.
According to the Sherriff, at the time of the encounter they did not know that there was an Amber Alert issued for these two people. Late Wednesday night, after they came back home and saw news reports, they put it together and contacted authorities.
About eight OClock San Diego Time, the blue Nissan Versa was located in the bushes, off road, covered by brush with plates removed. The vehicle ID was obtained through the vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
The Valley County and Aida County Sheriffs Department, the Idaho State Police, the FBI, the U.S. Marshalls Service, Customs and Border Protection have all joined in the search for the missing Hanna and James DiMaggio.
He also added, that this is a wilderness area and extremely difficult terrain to navigate.
ECM asked about the possibility of another vehicle, and the area is only accessible by foot, or horse. The Sheriff allowed himself to speculate that DiMaggio might have been attempting to hunker down.
The Sheriff also said that the vehicle itself was to be rendered safe by Explosive and bomb Technicians, and that San Diego Sheriffs personnel was en route. The search itself is under the lead of the local law enforcement that obviously knows the terrain better, but homicide detectives and technicians are on the way to gather evidence from the vehicle.
As to planning, Gore said that he could not confirm that this happened. He also said that he could not tell us what kind of wilderness training DiMaggio has.
Gore also said that She was alive on Wednesday and we hope that law enforcement will find them up in the mountains there and return them safely.
Ethans Fate
Gore also said that at this moment the Coroner is still working on the body of the child. They do not have a definite conclusion, and he is still hopeful that Ethan is still alive.
He also talked with Brett Anderson before he came to address the media, and informed them of the latest developments.

Kind of back up my speculations on how this is playing out and the unfortunately likely outcome. And my speculations had come to me prior to seeing all this info I have looked at today.
The friend in the second video seems to doubt that there was a long-term plan (small pack) or that the skills of the perp are elevated enough to carry the two of them for long in that environment.
With any luck she will escape/be found in good health and he will be caught and detained.

(67,078 posts)Strictly speaking, is it not appropriate to use that term until admission of guilt or conviction of the crime?
Does the fact that the was killed mean that he was automatically guilty of the crime?
Don't get me wrong--I'm confident, based on all available information, that he committed the murders, arson, and kidnapping that are attributed to him, but what do we do in less clear-cut situations?

We can certainly revisit any number of cases from 150 years ago, but in the mean time we're probably better off deferring to the investigations performed at the time.
More currently, what is the difference between an alleged criminal and an alleged criminal who is slain? Does his slaying mean that he definitely committed the crime as alleged?
In itself, why should the criminal's death serve to remove all doubt of guilt?
arely staircase
(12,482 posts)now on to Booth. Must I call him the alleged assassin of Lincoln?

(67,078 posts)But it is still appropriate for the media and law enforcement to refer to him as the alleged kidnapper.

(12,482 posts)and media fuck this up all the time. i once heard a meat puppet refer to the "alleged death" of a murder victim. the girl was a captive. there has been a manhunt to find her. the manhunt found her. no alleged necesary. now answer my question. if CNN made reference to Booth, do you think they should hve to use the "alleged" qualifier?
Orrex
(67,078 posts)Can't comment on the "alleged death," which I agree is pretty bone-headed.
Also can't comment on Booth. If he were gunned down today, it would be appropriate to refer to him as the alleged shooter until after all the facts are known. If he were taken alive, then it would be right to call him the suspect, the alleged shooter and (after trial), the convicted killer. I'm sorry that you find this distasteful, but that's how it goes.
Regardless of the circumstances of the current case, has there never been a example of apparent abduction that later turned out not to be what it seemed?
I'm not greatly invested in this sad case, so I can't offer too much else other than to say that this kind of terminology is extremely common and much-lampooned.
