She wants to live as a woman and be referred to as Chelsea. Not that difficult, really.

but his medical care will be provided by the military prison system. Odds are strong that he will not be provided with the hormones required. The stage is set for a genuine conflict there.

Different groups will refer to Pvt. Manning with different names. The military will use the name on his birth certificate, I'm afraid. His options are limited with regard to the people who hold him in custody.

I'll be happy to refer to Pvt. Manning as Chelsea, according to her request. Others may not recognize that request, and they're likely to be in charge of all medical care.

but it is her right to identify as a women - unfortunately the military is under no legal obligation to recognize her choice.

If you truly live love and laugh, this should not be a problem for you. Or anyone else.

She wishes to be called Chelsea and wants to live as a female. It doesn't change anything about who she is.

I knew when I saw her in the blond wig that it was not an affectation. This is her. It would be rude and unmannerly to call her Bradley.

There are quite few things that still need to come (counseling, therapy, gender reassignment, legal name change, etc), but let's honor her declaration on what her current identity is.

that it is.

Be respectful and let it be. Chelsea Manning knows who she is and you don't get to change that for her.

that I started this thread yesterday because, being very busy, I was not "up" on the Chelsea Manning issue. Once I gleaned info from Google I posted that it was a bit much to digest because all I had seen was info about the sentencing and then the name Chelsea kept popping up--in the meantime I'm doing other things but was curious and took a moment to see if they were related.

There was nothing offensive meant by my post, it was simply my thoughts at that time. I do find it difficult to keep up with so much information. Period. And whether the info is LGBT related or not, that difficulty does not change.

And the fact that it is difficult for me to digest all of this and much more besides this has nothing to do with your feelings and the offense taken here.

I think some people are overly ready to take offense even when none is present.
