well, after this scandal there are some observations about the media, especially from the bigger the fish pond.
Here in San Diego, though it is the 8th largest market in the country, it is still a small pond, with people working all the way from hyper local papers, all the way to local affiliates, and freelancers for CNN and other nationals. We like to help each other and do not get in other's people's shots. In fact it is not uncommon for crews to share critical information at emergency scenes. And if you get there late, yup, we even get that thing called traffic, we brief each other on what is known.
In some ways it is still a small media market. In others it is truly a major market, but we have not jumped into that ugliness you see in major markets.
Due to the small scandal we had crews coming from all over, far and near. Yup, Atlanta sent a crew, who thought we were a small town, that was hard core republican. No, we are not... the 8th largest market actually is a larger market than yes, Atlanta. We had a conversation with the guy in between the action. There is a lot of hurry up and wait in this business.
Then we had the Los Angeles crew that wanted us little people to move from our position since we were blocking their shot. Mind you, we were all setting for a presser. She ended up, grudgingly, moving up because crews were setting up. And we told her, you'd better move up, or you will not get a place.
Of course we also had three crews from Mexico, who also had to jostle for position, one from Mexico City. A BBC America crew that probably fed to BBC England as well. And then you had something that had us going... ok kids, can't you just have one crew feed to the rest? A few of the big alphabets had a local crew, the local affiliate. Then they had the Los Angeles Crew, in one case one from San Bernardino, and if that was not enough a cable crew and a regular TV crew. That is when you are going, no wonder we had half of city hall chambers, not a small chamber, taken over by camera gear.
And yes some of the local affiliates, because of the move to HD, are sending two crews. One of the cameras is HD, the other is still regular.
And the still photographers, Getty, AP, Reuters, the UT, us, I am sure I forgot somebody.
We were given a great compliment from one of the principals, for being "thorough and fair." You know you are doing your job well when in the course of the same rally you are both told you are a Liberal Media drone and a Republican parrot. Hey, it's what it is.
Why am I mentioning this? realize that when you have a major breaking story, of national importance, a lot of how important it is you can tell by how much crap shows up.
Tom and I were joking that parking enforcement was having a cow. Media can park in many places that you would have to pay for. We got the placard since we cover down town. I can see the poor parking officer. "I got one! Drats, another media vehicle!"
The parking lot in front of Civic Center, where City Hall is located, was taken over by satellite trucks, so was Third, and every other street around City Hall. It was... quite properly... a media circus.
As to Filner, when he was giving his final statement, if he stepped back, he would have tripped on the still photographers, he was completely surrounded. I took my shots and stepped out for the next photographer to step in.
And yes, I can tell San Diego City Council Chambers have good AC... all that equipment, which runs hot, and people, and we still had some cooling. Oh and the Fire Marshal was damn busy keeping exit routes more or less clear.
Oh and that does not include all the supporters and detractors who also showed up.
I was laughing, my usual perch, well the Fire Marshall was keeping it clear, in case of fire, or making the best attempt humanely possible. So a whole first row of seats on the left side was clear, that was an emergency exist. But since we cover city hall regularly, I was able to just leave my recorder where the microphone for witnesses is, and let it go.
This is just the inside story of how some of this is done.

Someday the boss wants to do tv. Those cameras start at 10k. That is used.
Boom Sound 416
(4,185 posts)Try 100k for a Panasonic hdx 900 kit. Although even those are a bit archaic and then you need sound.
I spent a number of years as a member of the pool media out of NYC. It's a never ending struggle between stills and video. They think we are evil. We know they are
pool only get used in a few scenarios, but I know what you mean. I hated the mash up of it all. The hurry and wait, the total disdain from security or secret service. Yet another never ending struggle.
But if we pool it all the (not that I know what you do, but I gather the idea) independants like yourself will be the first to go, as well as, locals from the area and it will be NYC and Washington DC crews flying in.
I doubt that much will ever change. Too much going on all the time that isn't the president or head of state.
Happy Chasing and
Get down! You're the shot!

(154,021 posts)you are right. We were looking at it at one point, but quite frankly, it is the boss's turn to buy THAT if they truly want to go to video. Me, we get pretty good shots.
And since we are the 8th market in the country, not the first, security gave trouble to all the kids from out of state who did not have a proper press pass.
It was funny, they were irritated. They checked our city issued passes, yup, up to date, go right ahead. You STOP!!! But I am (quite honestly do not remember the national). Had that puppy face of BUT, BUT...

(4,185 posts)I bet we couple swap some stories.
I left news in 07. I miss it every now and then

(154,021 posts)Actually one of my favorite stories involves the Chariot Fire. We carry topo maps to fires, and one reason we got to the command post is we shared with Cal Fire and Coronado Bat. Chiefs. They needed to get up there to get their maps, but they had no maps. It's kind of a catch 22 situation. And for some reason going through an AF facility, the road is not well marked on most maps.
So after we looked for it in a topo and found it, (not all of it was on the map either, but the beginning was) we followed them, and got the good shots above the smoke. Ah yes, the CNN drop by the VLAT were impressive, and not through the smoke. So the paper got very good shots nobody else did.
This, I quite frankly hope we do not get another media national level story for a while. The scram to get in there for the highlights of the run and games was not fun. I figured though that this peek behind the scenes would be of interest to some here. And what was really funny was to see the self importance grows with the size of the outfit people work for. That was actually more than just an eye opener.
I am glad I work in a market that while large, still acts like a smaller market. I mean, can you imagine a local crew sharing cables with another local crew if their cables are not good in your market?

(4,185 posts)It does happen. I can't tell you how many people I've explained mic/line output on a mult-box. I guess with like Everthing else there is that 10 percen of jerks.
But when the fit is hitting the Shan, then no. I'm not you're friend at all. But it's only out of fear of losing my job to the other hundreds of people trying to get it. And that's not so likely in a smaller market.
Where I'm from their are 8 sound guys. All are good and all are nice. And all of them know there is only room for 8 and frankly no else is trying to get in. In NYC, not the case.
But if we cross paths and you need xlr or a connector, you got it.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)with a lavalier. It gets pretty descent sound for radio, but they do not make that connector. What is the name? I think I can get a USB (micro) with the connector to the box made. There is a place that makes custom cables in town. No, SD City Council does not have the direct entry for the USB, and neither do the rest.
Boom Sound 416
(4,185 posts)1394 mini USB jack on the camera. I need a little more info and am not sure if you can or should do it that way.
Sound is analog (for the most part) until it either hits tape or sd card. Keep it that way in almost all scenarios
Feel free to pm me
Questions:
Make and model of lav mic
Make and model of cam
Does cam have xlr in or 1/8 inch jack
Are you using an outboard box between lav and cam as a connector/leveler like a whirlwind, etc.
Am I following you correctly?
Most common lav connector is TA5 if that helps
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)not camera. If I used my Nikon, we could... we will not... kills batteries, how many batteries can I carry?
I will PM you

(154,021 posts)And we photographed the circus too. The dynamics are amazing. With the Anderson story we also had national, and those guys were annoyed when we little locals got in front and sat down. Not like we were blocking their take, or anything.

(154,021 posts)thanks guys and gals for the kicks. I really appreciate it. You guys have your uses. Now bring over more of your friends, and keep that conversation going, I am sure there are a few personal attacks included, there always are.

(18,101 posts)you should never make accusations about bullying and stalking. I've seen this many times over the years. You can't complain about getting what you ask for.
Are these the kind of personal attacks you speak of?
