http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/08/19/beers-implicated-in-emergency-room-visits/?_r=0Nationwide, roughly a third of all visits to emergency rooms for injuries are alcohol related. Now a new study suggests that certain beverages may be more likely to be involved than others.
The study, carried out over the course of a year at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, found that five beer brands were consumed most often by people who ended up in the emergency room. They were Budweiser, Steel Reserve, Colt 45, Bud Ice and Bud Light.
Three of the brands are malt liquors, which typically contain more alcohol than regular beer. Four malt liquors accounted for nearly half of the beer consumption by emergency room patients, even though they account for less than 3 percent of beer consumption in the general population.

Previous studies have found that alcohol frequently plays a role in emergency room admissions, especially those stemming from car accidents, falls, homicides and drownings, said the lead author of the study, David H. Jernigan of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The new study, published in the journal Substance Use and Misuse, is the first to look at whether certain brands or types of liquor are overrepresented.

(80,708 posts)...what, half of Emergency room visits are related to marijuana overdoses, right?
And we must have at least 100 people a week dying from complications resulting from physical withdrawls from THC, Delerium Tremens, not to mention drowning in their own vomit or otherwise physically overdosing on cannabis to the point of brain damage or death.
I mean, pot's more dangerous than alcohol...
...right?

Higher=brow brands are more expensive and usually only sold at supermarkets and specialty shops.
Ergo, more people have access to them, raising the beer-related accidents to include these brands.

(6,568 posts)Some craft beers have relatively low alcohol content compared to malt liquors like Steel Reserve and Colt 45. I mostly drink craft beers, and I don't have a very high tolerance. I mostly buy brews with a 4.6-5.5 ABV. I also brew my own beer, and try to keep the ABV down there as well.

(7,720 posts)There are still 10 cans left. I remember trying the first can, not particularly enjoying it, and had another one later to see if I changed my mind. I didn't change my mind. As I recall, it had a 'alcohol' flavor to it rather than a 'beer' flavor. I need to find some 21 year old to give it to. I can think of a couple nephews who would not turn it down.

(1,459 posts)Or use it for cooking. Whenever we buy beer (or brew a not so great product) we save it for our cooking needs.
In fact, the tastiest, juiciest boneless, skinless chicken breast you will ever eat is marinated in beer for a minimum of one hour before grilling it.
We use craft beers only, but I bet the Steel Reserve would work just fine.

Then, there's the Tequila vs. Vodka vs. Whiskey dispute.
And how many of the beers drinkers were drinking Olde Frothingslosh. Without that data I have to reject the whole study.

(66,279 posts)At the very least, we need stricter beer laws. Ban high capacity packaging, and any way of delivery that can be performed with simply pulling a lever, like a tap. Ban them, ban them all!
