Climbing the economic ladder can influence basic psychological processes within an individual.
According to a new study published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin this month, wealth tends to increase a persons sense of entitlement, which in turn can lead to narcissistic behaviors.

Paul Piff of the University of California at Berkeley told PsyPost there is something about wealth that gives rise to a sense of entitlement, a sense that one deserves more good things in life than others, which in turn gives rise to an increased or inflated sense of self-importance, vanity, grandiosity, and omnipotence (narcissism).
Narcissism is a multi-faceted and complex construct, but that wealth is specifically associated with it suggests that as a persons level of privilege rises, that person becomes increasingly self-focused in a sense, becoming the center of their own world and worldview, he explained.
The studies in the paper measure narcissism in a whole host of ways, including measuring how likely someone is to stare at their reflection in a mirror (wealthier people do that more often). Even students who come from wealth, but have done little to create their own wealth (yet), report more entitlement. This suggests that wealth shapes an ideology of self-interest and entitlement thats transferred culturally from one generation to the next.
Piff conducted five experiments to investigate the associations between social class, entitlement, and narcissism.
The first experiment consisted of...

(11,841 posts)Thats got to be one of the most ridiculous things I've seen!! When I read stuff like that the first thing I think of is "why didnt I think of that?". I wish I could come up with something so stupid and get people to pay me for it. Remember the Pet Rock?

(111,255 posts)I was left enough to live on. Well, it generates a bit more than enough to live on, the way I live. I honestly don't see myself getting stingy because for the first time in my life I can afford true generosity and it's a gas.
Then again, getting rich was never on my to do list. Living well and ethically was.

(21,020 posts)true generosity is fun also.
And I don't mean the type of generosity that one can claim on one's tax returns.
When donating to the Goodwill or whatever, we get a paper saying so, with a space there for claiming an amount we can use for deduction purposes. It gets thrown out. Is it really generosity if one can get something back?
I don't think so.
I have more now than I ever have before. I've given a lot away. Clothing that only got worn once, if at all. A few days ago Mr Pipi found a nice end table out in the shed that hasn't seen the light of day in years. We left it at the end of the driveway by the mailbox and when we came home, it was gone. Looking at the yard camera/monitor footage later, it was possible to see which one of the neighbors liked it enough to snag it. Felt great to make someone else's day.

(5,763 posts)They could only say wealthy people have a greater chance of being narcissistic than the general population.
Warpy
(111,255 posts)and it didn't matter whether the wealth was inherited or self made, except the self made didn't know when to quit and enjoy it. The narcissists with inherited wealth never had that trouble, it was always party time and they were the center.

(69,014 posts)Because wealth is the proof that God really really likes them and the rest of us are damned.
I forget whether that's Calvinist or Lutheran but it's one of them.

And... will use them to attempt to change policy.

(634 posts)imagine being born Uber-wealthy. At some point in your life, you will have to justify (to yourself) this good fortune. Growing up, one might feel sheepish or guilty about your unearned wealth. Defensiveness would be a natural next step and eventually you would form a rationalization that highlights the Self as justification , in and of itself.
If you keep on with this imaginative exercise, you might see why I think there are no moral limits to what the rich and powerful might do to preserve and (if possible) expand their Wealth and Power.

Every once in a while you will read or hear about a business owner who actually respects and takes decent care of his employees instead of using them up like old mops and wringing every penny out of their labor. But they tend not to be billionaires.
