Actor Matt Damon on Edward Snowden: 'It's a great thing he did'By Marcus Hondro - DigitalJournal
Aug 26, 2013
<snip>
Matt Damon's newest, 'Elysium' is now out in the U.K. and the actor is over there on a press junket. Never one to shy from controversial topics during a talk on a BBC program, Damon commented on his countryman, Edward Snowden.
Favorably.
I think its a great thing he did," Damon told host Husam Sam Asi on the BBC Arabic TV show 'Alternate Cinema'. If we are going to trade our civil liberties for our security, then that should be a decision that we collectively make. It shouldnt be made for us.

(45,358 posts)It's not about Snowden.
It's not about Glenn Greenwald.
It's not about Julian Assange.
It's not about the Pauls.
But we sure do love them at Neo-DU. Swooooooon.

(55,745 posts)And why equate support for free speech, freedom of the press and the right to privacy to support for the Pauls?

I find it funny that the most progressive and liberal people I know here are being labeled as NEO-DU precisely as the site slips farther right on the turd way trail.

(25,592 posts)I just wish they would take their RW-supporting show on the road and take all their baggage with them.
And stop subverting DU with their DLC, New Democrat, DINO and other Right of center bull crap. That was not what Democratic Underground was founded on.
tridim
(45,358 posts)The Paul/GG/Snowden/Assange hero-worship on Neo-DU is based on RW Libertarianism and the gullibility that comes with it. None of these people are progressive.
Neo-DU has become REGRESSIVE because of these douchenozzles. I watched it happen, and it makes me sick.
hootinholler
(26,449 posts)Here I chalked it up to the turd way douchenozzels taking a dump in every thread they feel offended by or they think is offensive to B.O. or H.C.
Oh, and well I support Assange and Snowden and Manning, plus I appreciate what Greenwald has done with his reporting.
So go ahead and call me (and my pals who support transparency) a bunch NEO_DU libertarian douchenozzles, you wouldn't be more wrong and as an added bonus you get to alienate the people you claim this site is for.

(26,449 posts)I'm not sure why you are so invested. Oh, and BTW, DU is a progressive liberal site for democrats who are progressive and liberal.
You can continue your tantrum or go piss up a rope, it matters not to me although should you continue I will have some evening entertainment.
ETA Thanks!
stupidicus
(2,570 posts)indeed, in all cases it's the validity and merit of what they've said and done far more so than who they are.
SNowden for example, coulda been you but for the embassassment it caused your leader acting as an impediment.
GG coulda been Walter Cronkite if he wasn't dead
etc
tridim
(45,358 posts)I don't worship hack reporters and politicians, or let them use me and toss me aside when they're done.
Snowden is a dumbass, just like all RW Libertarians.
stupidicus
(2,570 posts)I'd say he has a leg up on you at least in terms of being able to figure out that the respect many have for him, GG, the Damons, Ellsbergs, etc, etc , etc, and/or their efforts, merely rhetorical or otherwise, isn't like the kinda love they have for their family/friends/pets, and doesn't come close to the denotative definition of "worship" either.
Those kinda comparisons and license taken with words like "worship" are obvious efforts to belittle legitimate non-love expressions of agreement with which you disagree, and more often than not, in lieu of any meaningful or substantive way of undermining the reasons things like respect, etc, are offered to them for specific acts.
That's why it's not about Snowden, etc, and rather about what he did in this narrow and specific case. One could easily concede (based on our shared opinion of rightwing libertarians) that this is an example of a generally speaking, a bad person doing good, like Bush's efforts in Africa for example, but to focus on the bad in Bush in no way diminishes the obvious good his actions in that case have had. Unlike with Bush (whose sins/crimes aren't even remotely comparable to Snowdens/GG alleged worship) however, where his likely motives -- a desire for redemption perhaps, either in the eyes of his god, for his legacy, etc -- Snowden's, GG's, etc motives are clearly based in/on things that are part of/flow from their ideological/moral makeup (unless of course, you wanna argue that libertarains, whether of the left or right variety, haven't long objected to such) which is shared by those who "love" them, even if there's a great deal of disagreement coming from the same sources. An indictment of them in the narrow context of their efforts to reveal and curtail the survelliance state is also an indictment of all of us that object to one and who agree with their motives and efforts. All of this "Paulite" BS differs not one iota from the BS rightwingnuts spewed about how us anti-Iraq war folks supported SH, and "hated the troops and loved the terrorists" for that matter.
That's no doubt why we've seen all the various ways they've (and those of us that agree with them on this in ways you repeat daily -- like here) been attacked as messengers, and efforts made to undermine their credibility ranging from boxes in their garages to their libertarianism -- it stalls the inevitability of having to take a personal stand, pro or con, on the issue. There's little doubt in anyones mind at this point that had these revelations been made by a dedicated, lifetime "liberal", and reported by Eugene Robinson, that they'd have similarly been crucified by your type, and poor Eugene no doubt would be a designated self-loathing black man by now and an UT for libertarians. Your emotional investment may not be of the kind you seek to conjure up and belittle here, but you are no doubt invested heavily, no?
It doesn't matter whether you "worship" BHO or not. If you are opposed to a "Stasi" state as some characterize it, as a voter/supporter of his, he appears to have tossed you aside. The amount of emotional investment one puts into Snowden, GG, or BHO has no impact on the realities of the SS or the remedies of it. And your solely loving your family, friends, and little puppy dogs and kittens too doesn't make you on balance a "good" (much less a better one) or even a "smart" person, given that the common Nazi or AQ member no doubt satisfies that minimum of societal expectations.
And all your efforts to malign the gratefullness and respect those "villians" have generated/garnered through their actions on this matter due to the common ground shared, makes your possession of excessive goodness or smarts highly suspect, and makes you more like those rightwingnut libertarians (at least in terms of illegitimate debating tactics use as noted above and "goodness" standards) than whatever agreement is shared on this issue those you belittle with these efforts could ever hope to achieve.
So, "please continue". You guys are some of the best entertainment around here

(26,449 posts)I would have loved to see the reply to this cogent summary.
Thank you for taking the time.

(14,173 posts)You wouldn't have the balls.
New's flash: None of the Snowden supporters "worship hack reporters and politicians, or let them use me and toss me aside when they're done" either. These being "reporters" like David Gregory who's only job consists of degrading other journalists and journalism in general. Actual journalists like Greenwald for instance.
By "use me" I can only surmise this means "tell me things I'd rather not trouble my poor fragile mind with". And these individuals cannot "toss you aside", but YOU can toss them in the bin without a second thought, which you seem to have done.
So because Snowden has Libertarian sympathies this wipes out any support for his actions and the debate about civil rights and privacy he has forced into the light? And on top of it you also paint anyone who writes in support or also publishes government lies and crimes as hacks as well? Wow. Ron Paul also disagreed with the Iraq war and the obscene amount of the budget going to military spending. Does this mean that you must now SUPPORT that war of aggression and want even more military spending?

(29,381 posts)just looking for a way to bash, which makes your statement pathetic. Yes, Tridim... you go ahead and support the destruction of OUR constitutional rights, the rights millions have bravely fought and died for... what silly people they were, because this is a bout the way some argued in defense of the personal attacks on a whistleblower exposing unconstitutional actions by our present government. Weak.
