Syria crisis: Downing Street fury over Labour stance

A row has erupted over No 10's claim Labour is giving "succour" to Syria's regime by not backing the prime minister over military action there.

Labour is demanding an apology for what it describes as "infantile" comments.

Downing Street is reported to be furious that Labour leader Ed Miliband has not backed David Cameron's motion paving the way for military strikes.

It comes as MPs on all sides express concern over the use of force in response to a chemical attack in Syria.

Downing Street can harp, whinge , whine , moan , jump up and fucking down as much as they like - they lost the vote and can just deal with it.

There were quite a few backbench Tories against an attack. I expect some backbench Lib Dems voted against the government, but no-one so far has said the Lib Dems in government positions did (and if they had, it would be big news).

and I wondered how much of this was LibDems. I wonder how many backbenchers voted against this.
As they said on BBC this is...stunning extraordinary and humiliating defeat...'

Britain will no longer continue to support any efforts to attack Syria - it is over. The PM has admitted defeat. Freaking wow! Lessons learned from Iraq.

"Stunning scenes. Michael Gove overheard shouting at Tory rebels outside Commons chamber: “You’re a disgrace, you’re a disgrace”."

Sarah Vine, Michael Gove's wife, has been tweeting about the vote.
"I am SO angry about today's vote. No military action would have come out of it. It was simply about sending a signal. Cowardice."
"Pathetic losers who can't see past their own interests."

Just one of those things. The issue wasn't associated with the strength of leadership - just a shite issue which I'm pleased came out the way it did.

Depleted uranium was used in Fallujah by the US and Israel used white phosphorus in the Gaza Strip. So much for red lines.

see 11.05pm BST

Jeremy Paxman asks Hammond if MPs will have it on their consciences if there is another chemical attack in Syria.

Hammond says that he hopes that will not happen.

He says this will "place some strain" on the special relationship.

Paxman asks if Hammond wants the US operation to still go ahead.

Hammond says that is up to the Americans. Now that Britain will not be involved, Britain will probably not be consulted on American plans.

follows the will of the people, it will go down in defeat here too. I don't support it and I'm a Democrat and a veteran at that. I just don't support the rebels or Saudi Arabia and Qatar. I especially don't support Netanyahu either. Let them fight their own Wars and leave America out of it. I think they are a bunch of liars anyway. Especially when the head of the SNC is a Saudi puppet and answers to their crowned Prince. The same guy that tried to bribe the Russians. They just want to divide this country up so they can spread their own influence. Every area they got control over Syria, they started establishing their own laws over Syrians. There are millions of Alawites,Christians and Kurds in Syria. Just what do they think will happen if they change the power structure in this country? You will have more massacres in this country, just like Lebanon and Iraq. That is exactly the plan. It destabilizes yet another Arab country with only Egypt, Israel and Iran with a more stabilizing military force, to protect the country. Syria has one of the best Arab Armies in the Middle East right now, next to Egypt. You of course got the Saudis. Syria and maybe Egypt are the only secularist states left also which allows religious freedom.
