I'm a little scared. I need some hugs tonight.

This Syria stuff has me a little unnerved to begin with, with all of the people getting killed and the indisputable fact that Assad used chemical weapons against his own people. But now I find it's worse than I thought: I just read that our president believes that we might be next on Assad's list to be gassed!

This is very scary. I don't know what to do, where to turn. I don't even know what a Syrian gas bomb would look like if I saw one on my neighbor's porch: is it shaped like a jawbone?

I fixed some tea and pulled my children close to me under a quilt, it's times like these that help us to remember how vulnerable we all are in these dangerous times of terror, and how President Obama has kept us safe. I do know that our President is looking out for us, and once he bombs the shit out of Syria - hopefully before the meddlesome UN has a chance to write their fucking bullshit report investigating the gassing - we'll all feel a lot better.

Sincerely yours,

Government Sock Puppet Manny

Senator Warren. I want her to remain there for now. She can do far more damage to the GOP and the big banks in her position. Her Presidential run can wait, not that I believe she wants one yet. Thu Aug 29, 2013, 09:49 PM

<...>

I'm fine with the US and its allies inflicting great pain on the Assad regime if they gassed heir own people. Not troops on the ground, not a war, but some sort of strike to let them know that we care. Bullies understand nothing less than a 2x4 to the head, as I learned growing up.

Here's the problem: I don't believe a #%*@ing word coming out of Washington, unless it comes from the mouth of a very select few. Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Alan Grayson, perhaps Al Franken and Ron Wyden, and that's about it - let me know if I've forgotten any. The lying has become so flagrant and ubiquitous... well, I've never imagined that it would be like this, not in my country.

<...>

Here's Franken's position.

Franken, Klobuchar: Chemical weapons use must have consequences

Mark Zdechlik

Minnesota’s U.S. Senators are weighing in on a possible American military strike in Syria.

DFL Sen. Al Franken said he does not think the Obama administration needs congressional approval to launch a strike. He said there is little doubt that Syria’s Assad regime was behind chemical weapons attacks in the country.

Franken called the use of chemical weapons a violation of international norms that must have consequences.

“This cannot be allowed to stand,” he said in an interview. “Now, this again is not about another land war in the Middle East. This is about a strike that is going to either use cruise missiles or bombers, so this is not about U.S. troops on the ground.”

85. I favor a strike once we have the proof we need.
Thu Aug 29, 2013, 10:06 PM
Aug 2013

It is my understanding that we do not yet have that proof.

The video by Wesley Clark in which our conflict with Syria was said to be part of a concerted effort to attack a series of countries in the Middle East makes me wonder how we can be so certain that we know where the chemical weapons came from and who used them?

It just looks like a very odd coincidence that our government would plan prior to the Iraq War to wage war or achieve "regime change" in a series of countries the next-to-last (as I recall) of which was Syria and then allege that the Syrian government used chemical weapons on its own people.

The origin of the chemical weapons is not known. Our claim that Syria used them is quite believable in theory, but not supported by facts. It is based on conjecture. The chemical weapons could have found their ways into Syria through a number of parties and by various means. And even if they were dropped from the air, in this age of drones, etc. Syria is not the only party that could have dropped them.

It is most likely that Syria used the weapons. But that is not certain. Given our history, we need certain.

What's right about killing civilians to protect civilians? What's right about getting involved in a war where there are no "good guys", only extremists on all sides? What's wrong with waiting for a report from the UN investigators?

I didn't vote for Obama to start another conflict in the mid-East, I voted for him to end those wars.

Fri Aug 30, 2013, 08:43 PM

allows him to get his war on without congress declaring war under those specific situations (and even then congress must concur within 60 days), the rest of the act limits his powers requiring him to specifically defer to and consult with congress.

Viagra strikes to make one appear virile and strong for Putin and self appointed police actions to punish criminals (as if Obama was head judge and hangman for the world court) aren't covered by the war powers act.

So he will not really be within his rights but I am sure his legal council will redefine the appropriate words to allow him to pretend to be as has become standard operating procedure whenever rules need to be broken for the rules own damn good.

Want to send cash to people that take over a country via coup? No problem redefine the coup as something else (all legal now).
Want to ignore the 4th Amendment? Redefine the word "reasonable" to mean "for any reason at all, even secret ones" (all legal now)
It just depends on what the meaning of the word is is .

Keep up with the international news - the UK called a special session of its parliament to vote down joining the US in attacking Syria. I guess the UK Parliament needs you to explain the wonders of "nuance" to it. How "nuanced" are drones and missiles? How nuanced will the economic costs of this war be?

"Nuance" is defined as a subtle difference in meaning or tone. Do explain to all of us "peacemongers" the nuance option on drones and missiles. I didn't realize there was a special switch or software for that. Or the subtle differences in death for individuals ending up as collateral damage.

I'm a little tired of the peacemonger vs warmonger vs hatemonger vs whatevermonger.

Nuance also realizes each instance on it own informed by history and past but not limited to nor boxed in.

When the world becomes perfect, these arguments will make more sense.

Until that time, a whole lot of people might want to look at what values and attitudes continue to allow the existence of a bloated mic, the forces that continue to prop up dictators, and those who continue to accept brutality as a show of strength and who accept violence as an acceptable way to deal with conflict and see meting out punishment as "Man's God given right."

But, I guess for now, we're stuck with those who go through life convinced, "It's just business; nothing personal."

99. It gets worse Manny, I was like you a few days ago when I first heard of the threat to our security
Thu Aug 29, 2013, 10:32 PM
Aug 2013
Threats to my security make me feel very insecure, add to that that the revelations that there are weapons in existence that can kill me and I tend to lock my windows and doors and hide in a small hole I have dug under the floorboards in my bedroom.

I have not left my hide hole in days and the reserve batteries to my flashlight are nearly out, I fear the growing fear that will ensue when the only light I have left to keep my fear in check is the light from this dim old computer monitor.

I know I can move the floorboards out of the way and ascend to the house proper for some more batteries and supplies such as clean water and food, but dare I risk it?

......

I think not,

now that I know that I am next on the list to be gassed unless a brave proactive warrior like Obama can save me, I think I will continue subsisting own my own urine and feces a few days more (tho it is doubtful I can take such terror that long).

The tremors are getting worse (makes it so hard to type, thank Obama for spell check) and the nightmares are of the waking variety, I don't see how any sane man could be expected to hold out as long as I have, let alone much longer.

I have heard that the UK will not act with Obama to save my life and that France may allow me to die by gassing as well...

Obama is my only hope, but the fear that he may not be allowed to save me unilaterally has me believing that perhaps I am already dead...

There is some rat poison a few feet away under the kitchen floor, I am not brave enough to take this imminent threat to my life much longer, if Obama can not blow up the country that wants me gassed to death within the next few hours I feel I must succumb to the inevitable and choose the rat poison to the few remaining days of torturous fear I would have left before the gas is dropped on my house.

It was an honor to know you my brave friend, if only I were as brave as you I might be able to hold out for our hero.

I am sad we shall never meet...

...I hear the poison tastes like almonds, perhaps it will be a gentle, kind sleep that awaits me.
Thank the President for me if he saves the rest of you, we are not all of us strong enough to survive such fear and impending danger, I know he is doing his best to expedite the bombs that could save my life so I blame my own weakness and not his heroic resolve.

Your friend,

With every day as Obama goes further down the NSA/MIC rabbit hole, I wonder if there really is still time for our country, our democracy, our environment, our future. I was watching the coverage, listening to them talk about the 100,000 children and families that have been killed in Syria in the past couple of years, which hadn't really alarmed anyone, and how much worse the 1100 killed in the "gas attack" made things, what with their dying and not being all blown up and stuff. I have heard us threaten to do something, to right this evil, that we were going to send bombs over there and blow more things up (here are some things left to blow up, right? Or do we need to give them some aid to build some new stuff and blow that up?) so we can kill people to teach them that killing by bombs is ok, but not with gas. because that's just wrong, eh?

But then I heard about the delays, and I nearly climbed up on my chair yelling at the television, "NO! We can't wait! We have to go now" and "We have to teach them, else they will gas the whole world". I began yelling "USA! USA! USA!" (to tell you the truth I was getting a little aroused, as war plans will do for people). Anyway, I finally calmed down, because I heard Obama said he would go drop that bomb on his own, even if he didn't get anyone else to agree with him. We have to protect ourselves!

But then...as if our of nowhere, this cloud enveloped me, and I began to gasp for air, nearly retching onto the carpet. I began to panic, thinking "Oh, Lord., we've waited too long, he's found a away to send his missiles over here, and now thousands of people are going to die...

But, as the cloud passed, I realized that I wasn't dying after all. It was just my dog, who had gotten into the green beans. They always give him gas.

I'm with you, GSP Manny. Or I will be, after I take the dog outside.
