A direct 90 degree broadside would have looked much different.
As a former sailor, I will say that the closest I came to death in the Navy was from an underway replenishment, refueling at sea. Our ships did not come close to collision, but I came very close to being caught by a line and pulled overboard.
Extremely dangerous evolution when ships operate in close proximity to each other.
I am not going to poke fun at this incident, knowing the difficulty of the exercise.
Towing boats, at any level, is extremely dangerous. A parting line will whip back and kill a person standing on the bow. Even with small pleasure craft.

(13,812 posts)I had a CO we nicknamed Capt Crunch. He had a habit of getting into fender benders with other ships.
But nothing like that.

(7,720 posts)One cargo ship was carrying a load of red paint. The other cargo ship was carrying a load of blue paint. There were no casualties, but the crew members of both ships were marooned.
