(10,751 posts)...just, wow!
One summer years ago I decided to swim for exercise. I was in my 30s. By the end of the summer I was able to do 1 mile in 1 hour. It took a lot of work to get there. Swimming 2 miles in 1 hour is hard for me to imagine. Doing it for 54 hours, at 64 years old... just, wow.

(53,475 posts)Swimming in the open ocean is much, much more difficult than swimming in a pool, despite the added buoyancy one gets in salt water. The wave and current action, however calm, is worse than anything the Speedo-clad racers in the next lane could generate.
Her accomplishment is magnificient; I stand in awe of her.

(13,029 posts)So what exactly did she do on her previous four attempts?
Hmmmmm..that would be..gave up.
The whole "you can make anything happen just by willing it" subculture is embodied in that one delusional statement of hers.

To me, never give up means continue to strive for your goals, even if you suffer setbacks.
Congratulations, Ms. Nyad.

(13,029 posts)It was good luck, not the presence of anything that was absent the last four times, that had her making it this time. if she had failed this time, she would not have tried again (by her own admission).

(1,514 posts)There are a lot of us who know we will lose in the end, but continue to fight against the inevitable defeat.
I have a severely autistic grandson. His mom (my daughter) walked out on him when he was 4. His dad (my ex SIL) took care of him until he was 18 and then said he was finished. My grandson lives with us now. I know that he will eventually end up institutionalized, because there will come a point when I am too old to care for him. But it's not today, and it won't be tomorrow. I will never give up, even though time and old age will win in the end. I will continue to fight until I am finally beaten. I will know that I never gave up, that I did everything in my power to keep him safe and at home and in my care until I could not go on any longer.
Even though I will fail, I will never give up.
