You know by now that Olympia Snowe will not seek reelection this year. It may be good news in that it's a pick-up opportunity, but it's bad news in that it is a must-win for us. Any Republican who replaces her will certainly be more conservative.

(3,030 posts)We should be able to elect a strong liberal Democrat, but if we get two or three Independents on the ballot (and this is Maine, so anything is possible) it could dilute the vote. LePage was elected with only 39% of the vote.

(13,570 posts)early for Mitchell, the Dem, so Cutler the former Dem and moderate could not win. Mitchell the Dem would not have beaten LePuke 1:1. Indies would have held their nose and voted for LePuke as a change. We should be able to win this, but a strong Indy run could frig this up for us. Have to see what happens.

(37,540 posts)But I think she realized her time was up. Teapublicans were going to gun for her in the primaries and Democrats understand the value of this seat in Congress...she was elected on a bi-partisan basis in the past, but I think she'd have had a rough re-election campaign. At her age, I suspect she just wasn't up for the stress of another re-election campaign. I think a strong Democrat who supports a woman's right to choose will do well this cycle, considering Obama's coat-tails should carry this state. We elected George Mitchell as US Senator...no reason we can't put another Democrat in there.
